Good sushi
by maxinboston at Citysearch
Good atmosphere at the sushi bar and nice preparations.
- Pros: Some of the best sushi in the area
- Cons: Not the most convenient location
Cheap and tasty
by HYPe at Citysearch
Really cheap ($27 for sushi for two? I think) and pretty good sushi this side of town. Not spectacular, but the chefs have good skill. ( I think the skill of the chefs are comparable to that of high class sushi places like Nobu in NYC, but the ingreidients are not as high class.) Almost no space to sit in.... impossible for parties larger than 4 (There's like 10 seats) but takeout was pretty fast. All in all, pretty tasty sushi for a great price ! And it's by a real Japanese person... so it gets 5 stars lol
- Pros: cheap price
- Cons: small space/ no parking/ long wait
Good sushi

Good selection of sushi and certainly a great ambiance
I love their suhi bar interaction - you can see teh shshi masters in action - brings a lot of charm and authenticity to teh place.
The place was full when we went their and got seated immediately.
You've lost that loving feeling and the quality, over priced. Actually, really bad food.

I first went to Oishii back in 2000 and the food was amazing. Rumor has it that the chef had worked at Nobu (NYC). Fast forward to 2008, the menu is still the same, dated since early 2000. The food is awful and expensive. ($82 for 2 rolls and a couple of apps and 1 beer for 2 people) I wonder if they changed ownership? I had the hamachi tata app ($17) and it was a spoonful of pre-chopped fish in sour soy sauce that can give your stomach ulcer. The nuta octopus ($8) was supposed to be marinated in a special Japanese sauce, well it arrived covered with American mayo ! The decor is still the same, dingy and cramped. The food used to be great so the place was charming. Now, it is just dingy and smelly. Recently I had take out with a friend and we both had stomach issues at 5am till the next afternoon. The more I think about what I have eated tonight, I am feeling sick to my stomach. Needless to say, I won't be going back and I do not recommend this to anyone.
- Pros: none
- Cons: the worst Japanese food ever
Stick with Sushi and Sashimi - rolls were average -below avg

We had a spread of sushi, sashimi and rolls. We were impressed with the freshness of the fish. However we were disappointed about the rolls. Other area restaurant such as Ginza (Boston one) would be a better choice for rolls.
best sushi

This place is awesome. The wait is usually long and it's not exactly romantic or anything, but the food tastes great. There is no better place for fresh and yummie sushi and appetizers in all of Boston.
If you like things spicy, I suggest the maki with baked scallop on top. It might be called Jeffrey's maki or something. It's a person's name.
I also love the scorched yellow tail maki and the black cod is delicious! If you are a sushi lover you must go!
- Pros: Food
- Cons: No tables
Highly overrated!

I just do not understand why this place is suppose to be good. Last time I went here, I ended up in the bathroom for the rest of my night. It is overpriced, crowded, horrbile service, and dirty. Do not recommend this place at all... I think the supermarket offers better sushi.
- Pros: cant think of any
- Cons: the list goes on and on
Devotees of this diminutive Chestnut Hill sushi spot claim it serves the best Japanese food this side of Tokyo.

The Scene
Rare is the time when all 13 seats aren't taken in the blink-and-you'll-miss-it dining room. Odds are once you're seated, you'll find yourself face-to-fish at the sushi bar, where expert hands slice and roll fresh, top-quality seafood.
The Food
While the sushi is superb, don't neglect the rest of the extensive menu, as the hot dishes are exceptional as well. For starters, the miso soup is light and flavorful, and the shrimp and vegetable tempura isn't greasy. The beef yaki ishi, a heaping portion of vegetables, rice, and steak on a sizzling stone grill, lets you cook. Regarding Oishii's sushi, the options seem endless; the rolls are filling and of the highest quality. The Boston maki features salmon, avocado, cucumber, and Boston lettuce, and fresh, tangy pickled ginger and butt-kicking wasabi add to the experience.
still the best, bar none.

yes, it's small (REALLY SMALL), and the prices are a bit high. but this is the freshest sushi you'll find, and the inventive creations are wicked.
Eat at your own risk
by begonias412 at Citysearch
I have eaten at both Oishii in the South End and the one on Hammond street. At both places I have had terrible service. This specific location has been the worst. One time I ordered the black cod, and they forgot to bring it out even after our sushi came out. The second time I ordered the black cod thinking it would be as the same quality as the black cod in the south end, instead it was very dry and lacked any flavor. By this point was ready to swear off Oishii forever, but decided to give it one last try today. I ordered many pieces of sushi and was very unsatisfied with them, when I went to complain the waitress said there was nothing she could do about giving us any refund on our bill not even so little as 5$. My point is, if you eat at oishii and are not satisfied with the quality of sushi, you will get no sympathy and will have to pay the hefty bill anyway. It's just poor business, I will never go back. Eat at your own risk!
- Cons: at least 30 min wait, no compassion for complaints
