Long waiting line, Great food

by jazzkingrt

The best hamburgers with fries in town. I would go their more often if the service was slightly quicker though. It's worth going their once, for the food. It, of course is only good for a casual meal, or if one is very hungry, thanks to the portions.

  • Pros: The food.
  • Cons: The crowd, the service.

disappointing

Fun place for the kids but the food was very average. Burgers came luke warm and very greasy. Soggy fries.

Great Place

We live in Newton and love Johnny's. Great food, fast service and great selection of down home comfort and breakfast foods. Watch out for the weekend breakfast crowds! Try the French Toast...different but awesome.

3 Strikes Out

by steev

This is the third time I have gone for food here. I can't understand how anyone can ruin breakfeast food and lunch so consistently. Food at best is mediocre and service is marginal. I watched my plate of food come up and waited 5 minutes for the server to finally pick it up and bring it to the table. The place wasn't even busy. My kids enjoy food and even they do not want to come back. Breakfeast for 2 came to $30.00.

  • Pros: Location, Parking
  • Cons: Mediocre Food, expensive, service

Part '50s diner, part Jewish deli, this affordable, family-friendly diner cheerfully caters to a bustling Newton crowd.

The Scene
With its old-fashioned soda fountain and Formica tables, Johnny's offers area families a colorful, unique and affordable destination for lunch, dinner and all-day breakfast. Offerings like matzoh ball soup and turkey Reubens expand the menu beyond the usual diner fare. Kids indulge in pleasing finger foods (hand-cut sweet potato fries are a must). Weekend breakfast and brunch is a local institution, so expect a wait. Youthful servers are quick to refill water glasses and coffee cups.

The Food

Like all great diners, Johnny's serves up a breathtaking assortment of dishes, perfect for large families. Garden-fresh salads are large enough to share, as are hefty deli sandwiches of the sinful (buttery, grilled Monte Christo) and saintly (savory low-fat pastrami) varieties. Hungry diners gravitate to the roast turkey dinner, which includes enough potatoes, stuffing, gravy and bird to feed a small family. A frothy egg cream from the fountain provides a fitting dessert.

nice place

by bkmr

I went to this place 2 times, alone, for lunch, being close to work location. Food was great but the place is little bit crowded and you have to wait to get a table.

  • Pros: lots of parking, prompt service
  • Cons: crowded

Affordable????

by dhaliwas

I like Johnny's. I really do. The food is great. The people are nice. The atmosphere is very diner-ish. However, I have take issue with ANY editorial that refers to Johnny's as "affordable". $9 for a reuben sandwich and a pickle??? This is Newton, not Manhattan. My last (read: most recent, or read: final) lunch for two people at Johnny's: 2 sandwiches, 2 cokes, 1 order of fries = $30.00 (incl. tip). Never again.

  • Pros: Tasty, Good Atmosphere, Lotsa Parking Meters
  • Cons: , Prices

A gem!

by petes99

Johnny's is a favorite restaurant when in the need for some homey foods. The menu is extensive, and the food still exceeds expectations. Great breakfast, but watch out for the weekend crowds!

I recommend the deli sandwiches and the burgers.. oh, lets not forget the homemade sweet potato fries! Prices are shockingly cheap, service is top notch, and you stomach will thank you no matter what you get. I feel like I'm at an old diner in NJ here!

  • Pros: atmosphere, menu, value

A great value

by DarkSun23C

This is a good resturant. The food is good, but the resturant itself is very crowded. Service is prompt, and it has the ambience of a diner. Overall, a great value, but the crowds may get to you.

  • Pros: Inrxpensive, Lots of Parking
  • Cons: Crowded
