This Brookline Village barbecue barn offers authentic Texas barbecue in a setting reminiscent of the Ponderosa.

The Scene
With a grill center stage, tin ceiling, wood walls and photographic gallery of Hollywood cowboy stars (and the three Stooges), there's a sense of fun and frivolity to the place that makes you want to order a platter of ribs and a cold beer. It's a great spot for drinks and dinner after work. Cold bottles of Lone Star beer and posted Hank Williams lyrics make this a Texas embassy in the heart of Brookline.
The Food
Begin with the firestarter appetizer, a pupu platter of spicy, fried bar food like stuffed jalapeños and Buffalo shrimp. The huge burgers are very good, as are the giant-sized fajitas. The barbecue ain't bad at all; the sauce is a bit on the sweet side, but you get a mountain of food. Baby back ribs are especially good, meaty and marvelously smoky; the Texas sausage must be a foot long. Save room for the homemade apple and pecan pies.
Great Eats!

I have been to the Village Smokehouse several times and it is always a treat. The cornbread at the beginning of the meal is great, as are the beans that are included with dinner entrees. While sometimes the service could be better, the fun decor and great food always makes me return to this restaurant.
- Pros: Cute decor, great food, lots of choices
- Cons: Less than stellar service
Not really BBQ
by tdeselm
We are from Southern Californis and used to Lucille's BBQ. We tried the Village Smokehouse and were extremely disappointed. Our BBQ food was served without BBQ sauce on it; we had to add our own at the table. The selection was limited in my opinion. The salad was wilted. Won't go back.
- Pros: location, fast seating, very casual
- Cons: food, service
Below Average Food

My husband had the BBQ Pulled Pork and it was very dry. I had the ribs and they were pretty tender but the sauce was nothing to rave about. The mashed potatoes were instant which was a surprise to me at a bbq restaurant. They were not good! The cornbread was very good. This was my first visit and overall I'd say I was disappointed.
Needs Salt
by epicureious
I'm from Texas, and have been to this restaurant twice. Although the beef is smoked, it is bland. Must not stay on the smoker very long. Brisket and ribs were both tasteless and needed salt. I brought a sample of the ribs to work, and two co-workers thought it was pretty lackluster as well. The ribs looked good, but didn't taste like barbeque. Adding a sea gelatenous sauce dosen't make it barbeque, either. There is a smoker there, and the meat could be really good if they would add salt or some seasonings and spices and actually smoke the meat long enough to get a flavor. They finish them off on the "grill" and it just doesn't work. ......
- Pros: good atmosphere, good service
- Cons: tasteless meat
Great BBQ food at a great price
by nmantia
I would highly suggest the Village Smokehouse to anyone that likes BBQ food, especially Steak and ribs (my favorite). Food is cooked over the fire and tastes delicious. The ambiance is great, service is friendly and prompt, and the price is just right.
If you go on a busy Friday/Saturday night, you can expect a little wait, but it's worth it. The menu offers many types of food, such as chicken, sausage, ribs, steak, etc, so there's something for everyone.
Decent Food but not so decent service
by intellchef
I went to try out this place because of this site and it's reviews. I was expecting something great but instead I only received decent food. I was on the go so I could not dine in, instead I ordered take out and the service was not that great at all. The young lady who handled my order was not very warm at all. She had a little edge to her word and looks that I did not appreciate.
Ribs Fall Off The Bone
by jillinboston
We have been to the Smokehouse many times and it is always consistent. Beginning with the yummy cornbread, the food is always delicious. Baby back ribs that fall off the bone, tender chicken, sweet baked beans and creamy mashed optatoes. Prices are very reasonable and the bar is always crowded. A great neighborhood place for that night you cheat on your diet.
- Pros: location, ribs, prices
If you like dry brisket...
by rlitner
This is a hamburger joint that serves a facsimile of BBQ. The sides are ok, but the meat is not. If you must go, stick to the ribs...skip the beef...the pulled pork is an afterthought.
BEST BBQ IN TOWN
by pattabasco7
I HAVE BEEN GOING THERE FOR YEARS. THE TEXAS DEATH SANDWICH IS ONE OF THE BEST SANDWICHES I"VE EVER HAD. THE RIBS ARE SMOKED TO PERFECTION AND THE SAUCE IS SECOND TO NONE. THE IDEAL APPETIZER IS THE STUFFED JALEPENOS. THE BRISKET IS AWESOME ITS A GREAT SPOT TO TAKE TH FAMILY. THE PICTURES ON THE WALLS AND ATMOSPHERE ADD TO THE FUN.
- Pros: tasty, fresh, fun
