Fresh, exciting Thai food near Boston U
by tomz11 at Citysearch
My wife & I visited boston this week and had a taste for some Thai. After reading a few reviews on various sites, we decided to try the Brown Sugar Cafe. We were staying near Copley Square and decided to ride the T (subway) to the restaurant which is located near a T stop. The T ride cost us a little under $7 total for a round trip ride and the stop was literally less than 50 feet from the Brown Sugar Cafe's front door.
Upon entering we were quickly seated and given an EXPANSIVE menu with great descriptions of TONS of different, exciting dishes. There is something for everyone on this menu (assuming you like Thai food!). I settled on a simple soup appetizer and my wife got some sort of mimosa type pastry appetizers. Both arrived piping hot and were extremely flavorful.
For the main course my wife ordered a wonderful chicken dish which was served in a half pineapple and I ordered a fantastic spicy tender beef dish. Again, everything was piping hot (temperature) and tasty. The service was excellent all night and all food we ate was wonderfully fresh and hot.
The music was a little goofy for a Thai place. That night they were playing some sort of Celine Dion-esque stuff which didn't enhance the environment much, but this was easily overlooked in the face of the good food. Also, I've seen other reviews saying Brown Sugar is a good romantic date night. I think it's a better place to take friends. I only say this because it's not a very quiet place. The ceilings are high and there was a lot of talk bouncing through the room, giving it the feel of a very lively restaurant as opposed to an "intimate" restaurant.
Finally, the prices were very reasonable (our main courses were each around $14) and the portions were perfect.
Highly recommend.
Enjoy,

I went to Brown Sugar (my favorite Thai restaurant) after several years of moving to the west coast. I went dduring lunch but and I managed to order my favorite dish, the crispy duck, even though it is a dinner dish and takes time to make.
The waiters were very happy to hear I was returning from out of town to eat at their restaurant and were glad to make my favorite dish. They are wonderful and friendly and deserve every star for their great food and great attitude.
Thanks.
- Pros: Great Food, Nice People, Very affordable
- Cons: Location on Jersey Street is far from T stops
Best Thai around

I've been to Brown Sugar a few wonderful times. Their food is absolutely the best Thai I've had in Boston. I'd go there all the time if parking wasn't such a nightmare in the Fenway. Still, for a date this is the place to go. It's intimate and the servers are fantastic. They refill your water and check in with you an appropriate amount, which is important. And the food, holy moly, it's great! I had the green curry, which was the perfect viscosity and spiciness.
- Pros: food quality, service
- Cons: parking
Best Thai around!

This place is amazing for those of you who love Thai, those of you wanting to try it for the first time and everyone in between! The quality and amount of food you get for the price is just outstanding. Food is always fresh and served promptly. One of the things I miss about living in the neighborhood is Brown Sugar! The seating is a bit tight - inside and outside. Even if you'd rather have more space, it is still worth it to at least go once. The chicken mango curry is my favorite!

Would say everything so wonderful!!!! nice, warm and cozy room.....there're big lovely gold fish in the tank.I'm a regular customer and I prefer the service from "Em" (actually her name is Oi but if you call her Em that easier) beautiful smile and always promt to service. The thing that make her diffirent is she doesn't come to just ask you what you want to eat but always has good recommendation for the fist time to try some thing new and ,once No.. many times that I saw the other gir(Big girl)l just comes to say "Hi,Are you ready to order?yes, what would you like?Excuseme, anything alright? Are you done?"That's it she can say I don't understand why?that totally different.Anyhow Brown Sugar Cafe still the great place to go.I'm falling in there food and service.

Great food in a student-y environment. Great drinks too! Very homey atmosphere. I'm not the biggest fan of Thai food, but this place was great!
- Pros: Good food and drinks. Nice ambiance.
- Cons: Parking is tough, but not impossible.
BEST THAI FOOD EVER!!!

I've tried numerous thai restaurants both east & west coast but nothing comes close to it. You must try Siamese twin dish. It's an absolute MUST!!! But everything else is good, too. If you're in Boston, you must try this place. You won't regret it. Only downside is service but the food is worth it.
Good Solid Thai Food, I prefer to do take out

I am a frequent customer. The portions are well sized. The food is solid and the variety is good. I prefer to take out rather than sit in the cramped dining area.
- Pros: the food
- Cons: dining area

A great place to hit up every once in awhile. The food is excellent although the portions are quite large so be careful when you order! be sure to try everything as in an appetizer, main course and of course dessert! try fried bananas with coconut ice cream. Get a traditional thai ice tea with your meal or a chilled lychee or coconut drink. They are all excellent. The pad see-ew and kua gai noodles are among one of my roommate and my favorites. The food is inexpensive and is a great place to chill. It gets quite chilly in there and there are always a lot of people but the wait never exceeds 20 minutes.
- Pros: inexpensive, good service, good atmosphere/view
- Cons: crowded at times, chilly
