Savvy is terrific!
by robinvella at Citysearch
I've been to Savvy twice now, and Helen has given me a terrific cut both times--seriously, the best haircuts of my life. She listens very carefully to what I want and asks lots of questions to make sure she'll give me the exact cut I'm looking for. She's also really fun to talk to. I really can't imagine what happened with the reviewer below, because Helen is amazing!!! She's also really concerned with making sure the cut will stay looking good as it grows out, which I love.
Savvy is not an intimidating place at all; I love going there! It's relaxing, not in the least stressful. The other stylists seem equally conscientious (though I only want Helen!).
My cut (no coloring) was $32 both times; my boyfriend goes to Helen too, and his are $18. You just can't beat it!
- Pros: Relaxing atmosphere, awesome stylist Helen and her soothing head massages, great prices!
- Cons: none
The best hair salon in Cambridge, by far
by ricintl at Citysearch
Helen has been cutting my hair for over 10 years now, and she is the most sensitive, skilled, and customer-oriented hair stylist I have ever met. I am writing this review at my own peril, since now Savvy Hair is a well kept secret, and I kind of hope it stays that way. But Helen and Richard deserve some recognition, too!

- Cons: none I can think of
Unpleasantly surprised

After hearing SO much about this place, and how great the prices were I thought I'd try it out. Honestly, honest to God (I really want to stress how sincerely I mean what I say) this was the single worst hair salon experience of my life. Watching Helen at work literally reminded me of the way my 6 year old sister draws with her crayons. The woman had no idea how to hold those scissors! They were only OK in her right hand, but when she had to switch over to the left side of my head you could clearly see she was struggling. I was very specific about what I wanted, a little layer, bangs, nothing fancy...She had me sitting in her chair for two hours (this is especially painful because she seems to have an obsessive compulsive issue with pumping the chair up and down up and down every two minutes) and after two hours I had no bangs, no layers, just a trim, when I specifically asked her to cut some bangs and keep the length. Then she charged me $40 for it!
It's incredible how wrong these reviews can be.
- Pros: Unintimidating atmosphere
- Cons: Limited hair-cutting ability
Best in Town

Consistently great service. Each time I go I get what Helen calls the "Tea Tree Experience" -- a delightful hair wash with cooling tea tree oil shampoo that feels more like a massage . This culminates with the best designer haircut I could ever wish for in which she truly expresses her creative self. At the end of it all, I come out looking and feeling great, and asking myself "was that only $18?!". Then I can spend the money I saved by not going to a Newbury St salon on some grub from one of the great eateries in Inman Sq.
