One of the most unusual and eclectic used clothing stores in the world.

by hardinghouseinncambrdge

A Cambridge landmark, the Garment District is one of the most unusual and eclectic used clothing stores in the world. Frequented by movie stars like Casey Affleck and Kirsten Dunst, the 28,000 square-foot former textile building sells over 40,000 pieces of vintage and contemporary clothing. The first floor, with its pink walls and pink wood floors, sells the best custom-made costumes in New England. It also houses their famous Dollar-A-Pound clothing section, where bargain hunters rummage through stacks of items paying by the pound. Upstairs, which looks like a warehouse with leopard skin curtains, has separate areas devoted to clothes from the 60?s, 70?s and 80?s. They have it all: 1960's 'Jackie O' suits and men?s velvet jackets; 70?s disco dresses and bell bottoms; and leg warmers from the 80?s. They are also stocked with loads of contemporary items: name-brand jeans, casual and dress slacks, shirts, sweaters, dresses, women's and men's suits, blazers, vests, skirts, shoes, hats, gloves, linens, aprons and ties ?you name it, they sell it. With the store?s huge silver horse in the lobby and real motorcycles - and even an actual airplane - hanging from the wall, the Garment District is like a shopping amusement park for adults ? and just as much fun.

If you're a REAL thrifter, then you'll LOVE this!

by MandizzleSue

I went in with the intentions to get a cheap wig to cover up a bad haircut, and I left with a big smile on my face. This place is AMAZING! I went to the dollar-a-pound section (which is kind of mis-leading since they jacked it up from a buck to a buck-fifty a pound (but they only charge 75 cents per pound on Fridays, most likely because the section is crawling with college students like me). I must say, despite one of the previous reviewers' judgments about this place being a "beggar's paradise" coming off as extremely rude and offensive, I will dignify with a response that I am certainly not a beggar and am happy with my purchases. I found four pairs of designer shoes IN MY SIZE, tons of casual pants, including J. Crew bottoms, some great vintage tees, a cowboy hat, and gifts for my niece and father, as well, for less than $20. I also got two brand new, in the package opaque tights for not that much more, so seriously, who the hell can beat that?! If you're a TRUE thrifter and you aren't afraid to commit, browse and dig for what you want, than this is the place for you!

  • Pros: the price, the employees, the location, the selection, the quality, the FUN!
  • Cons: walking to the nearby T station with a huge plastic bag filled with clothes is a little embarassing

Campy Cambridge warehouse sells funky secondhand clothes, including lots of retro outfits and accessories.

by Contributor

The Scene
Expect fellow shoppers at this shop between Kendall and Center Squares to range from social deviants to conformists; the former regularly refurbish their wardrobes here, the latter make the occasional trip when searching for theme-party costumes (particularly those '60s and '70s soirees). Almost everything for sale at the Garment District is less than $30, usually between $5 and $25 (most items fall into a pay-by-the-pound system).

The Goods
Got a new job where you need to wear black pants every single day? Need a couple of cheap, nonoffensive pairs? Check out the wide selection of gently worn work clothes. Other inventory is great for club duds, cross-dressing, costuming and of course, budget shopping. If it's time to tie the knot, forget Vera Wang and check out the selection of wedding gowns and party dresses in the rear of the store.

Amazing place!

by stanky

When you walk into this store it is amazing, there is nothing like it that I've ever been in. A huge selection. Two floors of clothing & accessories. Different and very affordable. It is a little off the beaten track, but it is definately worth the effort to get to. I'll be back soon.

Customer Service

by gdservice

After reading one of the most recent reviews I wanted to personally apologize to the customer. We at The Garment District certainly want everyone to have a good time - that is the whole point of the place. There are no "locked rooms" that would have items you could not buy, so it is a very odd answer to a question. My guess is that you encountered a temporary employee for our Halloween rush. Still that is no excuse & we are sorry if anyone is treated disrespectfully. I wish at the time you had told a manager so we could have identified the problem and corrected it. We are very accessable and available & always want to know what the customers want or need. Hope you give us another chance. We really like our store & want everyone else to have fun there too. - Chris Cassel, President

Mediocre selection, horrible service

by evinza

I went there to pick up an item I knew this place had for a costume party I was going to. I was told that I could not buy the item because it was in a room that was locked. I was a little annoyed that no one would bother to unlock the room, but what was completely unacceptable to me was the way that the worker (who I suspect may have been a manager, but I am not sure) cursed loudly to a coworker - within clear earshot of me - about how annoyed she was by my request (I was nothing but polite). I will never go back.

DO NOT i repeat DO NOT GO ANYWHERE GD!

by creepkid

Like the previous reviewer said, you have a more creative selection @ the Garment District than anywhere else. My father remarked that there's a whole different set of people here. They tend to be more creative and...alternative. While @ the Iparty in Quincy, all you saw where suburbanites and their kids Jim, Bob, and Sue.
