Great Haircut - Nasty Wax

by BrendaL at Citysearch

I've been coming at the Carriage House Salon for a couple of years and always had good haircuts. However, I recently had the worst wax ever - - the theapist double-dipped in the wax, succeeded in burning and bruising my skin and despite my request for "just a clean-up", she waxed half my brows off and did an even worse job on my bikini wax. I will never have any skin treatment done at the Carriage House.

  • Pros: Easy to make appointment
  • Cons: Staff VERY uneven in their ability

Stylish Salon in Heart of Cambridge Square

by mdropkinfrank at Citysearch

The Carriage House Salon is an amazing salon tucked away up on the second floor of a beautiful, old brick and wood building in the heart of Cambridge Square. The atmosphere is wonderful and the staff is friendly and helpful. I have gotten multiple haircuts here over the years and they are always consistently my favorites. You will walk out of this salon feeling beautiful.

Great atmosphere

by mu9999 at Citysearch

I got my eyebrows done here with Erin, and they look great! She really listened to what I wanted without my having to give too much instruction. Also they do the waxing in a relaxing spa room on a comfy bed (not just a sink chair in the back of the salon like some places). She spent a good 20 or so minutes making sure it was perfect. I will absolutely be back!

  • Pros: friendly staff, attention to detail, great value, relaxing
  • Cons: none

Finally found a stylist who listens and offers great advice!

by foodie1776 at Citysearch

I moved to Boston three years ago and have been bouncing around from salon to salon trying to find someone who actually listens to my ideas and can give me tips on new things to try or ways to make my idea work given my hair type (straight and fairly fine). A friend recommended me to Mindy and I can't say enough good things about her! She was really nice and friendly and had great ideas for my cut. It looks absolutely wonderful and I may even have the guts to go really short this summer with her behind the wheel. The salon is cute and is relaxing without any pretense. And I was so pleasantly surprised to have her use a bunch of different products on my hair and never suggest that I buy anything. When I got to the counter, I was able to get a small bottle of one of the products to try it out on my own, but again, no pressure. I highly recommend this place!

  • Pros: Cute salon, really nice stylists and staff.
  • Cons: None so far.

Awesome at the last minute!

by lilkel8267 at Citysearch

I procrastinated until I couldn't stand my roots anymore, and they fit me in with - no lie - one hour's notice, and then the stylist spent two hours with me. I saw Maki. Her consultation was great (talked me out of layers that really would have been disastrous on my baby-fine, poker-straight hair), she was easy to talk to, and gave me the most natural-looking two-color highlights I've had in years (maybe ever)! The place has a cute, unpretentious spa atmosphere, and the whole staff was really personable. It's not super easy to find from the street if you've never been there, but it is just stone's throw from the Church St. exit of the Harvard Sq. red line stop, and is right next to the Starbucks if you need a landmark to find it. All in all, I had a great experience and, as a new resident of Cambridge, I can definitively say that I have a new hairdresser here. It was so nice, I even scheduled myself a Dr. Hauschka facial for next week (having seen the other posts rave about it). Call Maki!

P.S. - The price for my two-color partial foil highlights on my super long hair was shockingly reasonable.

  • Pros: Squeezed me in at the last minute
  • Cons: Can be hard to find if you've never been there

Best Curly Haircut Around

by meggo79 at Citysearch

I have very difficult thick curly hair, and Arthur at the Carriage House Salon is one of the few stylists I have been to who is able to manage it and actually make me feel good about myself after leaving the salon. Not only that, but he is a pleasure to talk to, and works very quickly. The salon itself is very cute, and they do not pressure you to buy their hair products, which is a definite plus.

  • Pros: curly hair cutting, friendly staff, great atmosphere
  • Cons: parking in Harvard Square can be difficult, but there is a lot right next door

Greatest Service!

by caligirl83 at Citysearch

Carriage House Salon is amazing! I called and got an appointed for the same day for my very first facial. The place is adorable and very comfortable. I had a fantastic time being pampered by Erin who is absolutely incredible! She asessed my skin and personalized my facial on the spot so that I would get the services best for me - not just what's the most expensive. I left feeling wonderful, calm, and refresed and had totally different skin. I've already booked my next appointed and recommend Carriage House highly.

  • Pros: Great Staff, Fantastic Service

Dr. Hauschka Facials: The Only Way

by traprkeepr at Citysearch

For my first facial EVER, I wasn't sure where to go. But a dear friend recommended "any place that does Hauschkas." On top of that, I was dead-set on avoiding Newbury pretentiousness. Enter CHS! The vibe in the salon was perfect: warm, relaxing, with a mixed clientele. Every employee was friendly -- particularly Erin, the aesthetician, who wiped the nastiness out of my pores, sweetly. Basically, it's a $100 for a new you. Do it!

  • Pros: location, low-attitude from employees, the best product line
  • Cons: salon is a bit small (but cozy!)
