Douchey Bouncers, Exhibit A: Thomas McDermott

by nayqueenie

Our party was downstairs, our crowd was so big that the lower level was personally opened by the manager for our group [students of a graduate school in Boston, thus our need for libations].

I showed up in a fashionably, but not unreasonably, late manner, and the bouncer (named above) refused to let us down to where our party was. For that, I really should give this bar 0 stars. It's unbelievably insulting to your customers when you refuse to admit them to their own party (especially having made them already pay the cover).

And before you start to wonder to what degree I'm biased (at least in terms of the disparity of my comments between the male and female employees of Wonderbar), let me just say that I am a straight female and not some creepy guy who irrationally loved the female employees and hated the male employees.

The above-mentioned bouncer in particular was acting like he was guarding the gates of Ibiza. Come on buddy, stop giving your bar that much credit. (I made sure to get his full name, here it is again: Thomas McDermott, tall blonde douche with a superiority complex, which is likely the result of his over-compensation for lack of girth.)

The DJ upstairs was weird, but not bad. He only played 30 seconds of every song and then mixed in a new song very quickly; it was hard to enjoy the music.

I did enjoy my drink; it was strong and delicious.

  • Pros: good drinks, hot & friendly female employees
  • Cons: douchey bouncers, truncated songs, elitist mentality

The Secret to Wonder Bar Business

by Bethb313

Upon reading this please understand that I, writing this, have a Bachelors degree in Food Science, and understand the chemistry of Cooking and Food.

The "secret "to the pizza is that there is water added to the dough. This saves using tomato sauce and adds a slimy texture to the pizza. This is quite pleasing in taste, but when too much water is added is very mooshy and greasy. Secondly, I have gathered that business is best inside the restaurant, and that if you want delivery, you are 65% likely to get a less satisfying pizza.

  • Pros: the food eat-in food is great
  • Cons: The Pizza is poor when it is pick-up

Difficult Night

by Daan

One goes out to the bar to relax and let loose, I was more stressed and angry when I left than I had been all week. My friends were seperated to another location so meeting people throughout the night is difficult and they do not allow males to dance in the raised area at the back of the club, and my fiance was told to get down from the area, I never support gender inequality and this was a great example of it. I would not reccommend this bar.

  • Pros: Drinks were good
  • Cons: Gender Inequality, Serperation of Bar Areas makes meeting-up w/ friends difficult

Great bar in Allston!

by sc81

I love Wonderbar! I had the best Halloween celebration there a few years ago, and every time I have gone since has been a great time. They rarely have a cover (for girls at least; sometimes they charge guys $5). They play amazing music, and always have a really fun crowd.

  • Pros: Great music
  • Cons: Hard to get a bartenders attention

To Avoid The Typical Allston Crowd

by CamWalk1130

I've actually become quite fond of Wonder Bar since it has the same atmosphere and ambiance of a trendy nightclub/lounge in Downtown Boston without the Downtown prices. It certainly gets busy after 11pm but if you show up around 9:30-10:00, you can score yourself a nice, dark brown booth and get some table service instead of waiting at the bar for a drink. They have two bars: the main bar upstairs that is typically crowded and a second bar down the stairs which is small, less crowded, and much quieter than upstairs. The crowd is pretty typical every night of the week there ranging from those gangbangers looking to grind on petite little Asian women with the extremely well-dressed euro-Asian men. Music is pretty solid with mostly remixes of top 40 songs. Dance floor is small but thats a good thing I guess so people can get down and dirty. Drink prices range from $11 for cocktails and $7 for mixed drinks and they have a small food menu with practically only nachos, quesadillas, and wraps. A good beer selection (if you count good to be what you can find at any other bar. They have Sea Dog which is awesome!) Bouncers wear all black, including the bartenders and servers, and I have never had a problem with them. They have a "relaxed dress code" I'd like to call it where they claim they have one but its rarely enforced. Overall, I always have a good time there and when worse comes to worse to figure out where to go, depending on what you're wearing, def. check out Wonder Bar.

  • Pros: Good cocktail list for cheap prices, solid atmosphere
  • Cons: Same crowd every night of the week, "relaxed dress code"

Great Scene - No Wait Before 11p

by channey0

I was visited my friend who lives nearby and we told me we had to get there by 11p. It was a little slow but I'm so glad we did! Shortly after, there was this huge line and I guess sometimes they charge a cover after 11p. I has so much fun! The dancefloor was a good size so you were bumping into people left and right, and the DJ was fantastic. He even played the songs we requested. When we got downstairs, it was a cool place catch our breath and chat with friends without screaming to each other.

  • Pros: The bartender guy who puts on a show for you when you order something.
  • Cons: Downstairs bathroom.

CUBAN RAINBOW!!!! Best drinks!

by kcsunshine76

So , I walked in and had a look at the menu, then asked the bartender what his specialty is. He (Driven) mentioned something called a "Cuban Rainbow". It is a wonderful concocshun of fruit flavored vodkas and a tad of juice. It was incredible. My friend ordered a White Russian and said that it was the best one ever!!! We also ordered some food. The BBQ chicked pizza was delish!! Both the bartender and cook were amazingly friendly and talented at what they do.

Big up to the Wonder bar and phenomenal staff!!

Great place

by dominicanjewel

This is a great hang out but please get a new bartender. The chick with the black hair that is upstairs needs an attitude adjustment. The music is better some nights more than others.

  • Pros: Music, Ambiance, Location
  • Cons: Bartender

Allston hangout's varied live music schedule and welcoming comfort fare make it a popular date spot.

by Contributor

In Short
Popular with area students and young professionals looking to take a break from Allston-Brighton's beery sports bars, Wonder Bar provides a classy alternative. With its dark colors and designer martinis, the large upstairs room sports a New York lounge feel. DJs and live bands play throughout the week, and TVs show all the big games. A menu of upscale finger foods (roasted pear salads, baked brie with crostini, roasted vegetable pizza) keeps everyone satiated.
