Surprisingly good food

by candy13cr

I have been to Sunset a few times for drinks - always a good selection of beer as they are known for and a good crowd. I recently ordered food and was pleasantly surprised, for a bar, the food was good quality and prepared nicely. Would definitely recommend Sunset for both drinks and DINNER!

Just a perfect local bar...(don't tell anyone)

by dominiquegravelkim

This bar is your perfect neighborhood bar but not in any ordinary kind of way...The combination of many good things comes together nicely every time...The beer list is extensive and international, the food is surprisingly high qualty and the bartenders truly know their stuff when it comes to beers and making good recommendations, even depending on your mood. You just feel comfortable when you walk in, there's a lively atmosphere with lots on the walls and tvs placed high and discretely showing the main game of the day without overkill...The bar has 2 nicely-spread-out levels so it's rarely hard to find a seat (except let's face it on a peak Sat. pm, then you just get a table!). You can go with 2 friends or 10, or even alone to chill after along day at work, and you'll always walk out happier, or at least, a little more relaxed to face the craziness of the world outside!

BEER, BEER, BEER!

by connmanapk

Im originally from outside of Boston, but now go to college in Connecticut. I therefore feel its important to make the most of my trips to the city, and this usually includes a trip to Sunset. Everytime I've been there's space for me and some friends at the bar, the bartenders are friendly, the beer selection is AMAZING, and the food (although not exceptional) is well priced for Boston. The staff there is knowledgable and were great helpin me choose some microbrews that fit my tastes (personally a Lager guy). The Atmosphere there is really upbeat, and comfortable. I would say the only downsides are that they close fairly early and that parking is tough to come by on weekends. But the hike is worth it if you are looking for a place with good beer, good people, and a great atmosphere.

  • Pros: Beer, prices, atmosphere
  • Cons: close fairly early, parking

This is a must

by johnenglar1

They have great bar food and one of the best beer selections I have ever seen. The draft beers are well kept and they have a choice from all over the country and abroad. Nice friendly atmosphere from staff and customers alike. The barstaff has excellent knowledge of the beers to recommend, especially the guy with the goatee.

  • Pros: Best beer selction anywhere and nice atmosphere
  • Cons: Possibly lines at the door weekend nights

This Boston treasure boasts the area's best beer selection, and a menu of complementary pub grub.

by Eric Grossman

The Scene
With 112 beers on tap and almost 400 more available by the bottle, the Sunset's beer selection knows no rival in the area. Beer snobs sample obscure seasonal microbrews, while area youths stop by for affordable grub and a casual, upbeat scene. Booths and tables in the downstairs dining room are perfect for groups, many of which celebrate special occasions with half yards of beer.

The Food
Once patrons finish perusing the 12-page beer menu, they face an equally daunting task: Choosing from the plethora of affordable snacks, sandwiches and entrees (more than 150 in all). Particularly enjoyable are offbeat versions of familiar appetizers like potato skins topped with chicken and vegetables, and buffalo wings served boneless on a stick. For something more offbeat, try grilled raspberry shark "stix," served with banana-beer ketchup. Diners looking for a filling dinner can't do better than the popular sizzling fajitas.

Poor, slow and rude customer service

by gramor

Waited an hour and a a half to be seated, meals took 45 minutes to come out of the kitchen, a meal was spilt over one of the party, and no apology made. That meal took another 15 minutes to come out of the kitchen, waited 25 minutes for our bill, while our waitress started closing up. she was rude when we mentioned the bill again. Food average and such poor service, dont go there

  • Pros: Ambience and Beer Menu
  • Cons: Slow and inefficent staff

The amusement park of brewpubs for tourists

by loverswhne

I frequented Sunset back in the 90s. Less people, great staff, more locals and best selection and quantity of drafts than any other bar in Boston. Then word got out and the Sunset turned more into an amusement park making every effort to bring in the tourists and transient residents of Allston/Brighton.

Still a good place to grab a great microbrew but you have to go offpeak otherwise be ready to drink with the college kids sipping on their yards as a novelty or the many tourists.

  • Pros: Lots of tap beer, prob one of the best in town
  • Cons: Become a tourist trap

Best Beer, great nachos, busy

by hockiemack

I frequent sunset quite often. The food is great, standard American. The chili sampler is the BEST deal. All entrees have ample food, so consider sharing. The best thing about sunset is the beer selection. The menu can be overwhelming, but servers and bartenders are incredibly knowledgeable about the beers. The beers on tap change frequently, too. There is no chance of getting bored. My only complaint would be the service when the place is busy. We waited a looong time for our drinks.

  • Pros: Beer, food
  • Cons: service, noisy

Worst service in boston

by todayshow

While I agree that Sunset has a fantastic beer selection, and the food is delicious, the service is HORRIBLE. Mind you, my roomates and myself continue to go there frequently, so its not enough to deter us but we had a really bad experience this week when we sat at the bar and the manager was covering the bar while the bartender went to change a keg for 20 minutes. It took her 20 minutes to even take our drink order, then our wings we ordered came out and we still didnt have our drinks. Finally the actual bartender came back and got us our drinks and it had already been a half an hour. Luckily we weren't in a rush. I love the food and beer here, but I just wanted to warn everyone that the service is the worst I've ever experienced...ever.
