Great food, great ambience
by thomasgazi at Citysearch
I have to say this is one class place, brings back great memories of my times in Paris. The food is amazing, who ever the chef is my hat is off to him, the wine selection and recommendations were excellent, and I only have to say I wish I could have stayed for desert. The wait staff was knowledgeable and helpful. We will be back!
- Pros: Food
Lovely French Bistro in South End
by hotelman21 at Citysearch
The Gaslight has an eclectic, enjoyable ambiance from the moment you walk into the door. The service is normally very good and attentive to the guests' palate. I love the fresh warm bead served on the table. The steak frites are delicious, and creative cocktails make the atmosphere lots of fun.
The Gaslight is the perfect place kick back and relax over a great meal!
- Pros: Free parking, quick seating
- Cons: ala carte meals
Great South End Restaurant
by dvautour at Citysearch
As mentioned in a few other reviews, the service wasn't the best but it was ok. We also weren't in any hurry as one shouldn't be at dinner anyway. The food was good but not great. I expected more even tho my meal was the best of the 4 of them. The desserts were awesome. Good wine and beer list too. Free parking is a nice bonus. The prices were not too expensive.
Some reviews mention the noise. It is an open atmosphere and a cool one at that. On a Friday night, it was busy but no more noisy than expected. We had no issues hearing one another.
Would I go back? Absolutely.
- Pros: Great Atmosphere, decent food and great desserts, good price
- Cons: slow service
Decent food, great atmosphere

This place feels like a real French bistro, not an Epcot version. It's a little boisterous, the food is really good and not terribly overpriced, and the service was right on.
- Pros: Pretty authentic bistro, yummy food, good wine list
- Cons: None on the night I was there
Mediocre-at best
by jt0802 at Citysearch
If you like food, avoid Gaslight. It is a parody to a great brasserie, respecting the concept only in decor. It's cute inside, but very loud to the point of being annoying. I'm usually willing to put all that aside, even service (which was decent) if the food is good. The traditional French dishes on the menu didn't cost much, sure, but I would prefer to pay a little more to actually taste something good. There was nothing unique or special about the flavors--it could have easily been something I threw together on a plate at home--which is not why people go out to eat in the first place. You'd expect something better than mediocre, at least, considering all the hype about the "cool place over in South End". Disappointing.
- Pros: Brasserie decor and ambiance
- Cons: Barely mediocre food
longest wait
by megse at Citysearch
Going to Gaslight on a Monday night, one would think there would be no wait involved. That was certainly not the case! It was 30 minutes before our food order was even taken. Granted after the waitress bothered to take our order the food was delivered quickly, receiving and actually eating the food took considerably less time than actually ordering the food. The waitress was uninformed on what was available on tap, and it took several tries before a beer was actually ordered. The food was unimpressive, nothing special. For the vegetarain in the group there were not many appetizing options. By the time the food arrived we were annoyed and couldn't get out of the place fast enought. All in all a horrible dining experience, despite being considered fine dining.
- Cons: not very many vegetarian options
my favorite neighborhood spot

I couldn't disagree with the previous two reviews more. I absolutely love Gaslight! It?s my favorite place to stop for an afterword cocktail, which more often then not turns into dinner. Every time I go in the staff is so welcoming it?s just hard to leave- and really who wants to go home and after watching tempting dishes go by. I really enjoy their cocktails, especially the au poire. I also can't resist the baguette --and the presentation in the paper bag reminds me of dining in Paris. Whenever I eat there I have to have the beet salad and an order of the French fries- they are my favorite in the city. The salad also has a surprising kick- which I love.
- Pros: Atmosphere, staff, cocktails and food
- Cons: nothing really
Not Worth It
by cdarling22 at Citysearch
Gaslight has a friendly trendy atmosphere but that's about it. It was very loud and our waiter could not hear us well. The service was slow and they could not provide any recommendations on food. The steak we ordered was very salty and was delivered medium well instead of medium rare. The leg of lamb was chewey and on par with wedding food. The prices are reasonable but thats about the only complement I'd be willing to give this place and oh yes they have free parking.
Pass on this place, if you like a french style brasserie go to Eastern Standard or Bouche
Who reviews this place the help or owners?

This was the third and last time I will ever eat in this pretentious wanna be something else Bistro. The managerial staff still has not figured out how to run a restaurant. It is always a wait and the food is great or really bad. The noise is really over-bearing and while they do have a nice wine list the bar is often difficult to get to. The idea of the cigarette theme is just plain stupid. If you like smoking so much move to France, although they are finally banning it. I read these other glowing reviews and I wonder if we are dining at the same place or if someone else is writing them? Well at least they changed the music, The night I was in there I did not feel like I had to start break dancing on the floor this time. I don't feel the need to travel to an area that really needs another 10 years before it starts to have a nice feel to eat a mediocre meal after waiting 45 minutes. Not a great neighborhood yet. Maybe the staff should watch Hell's Kitchen and take a few tips.
- Pros: Great food sometimes
- Cons: Noisy, long waits, snooty staff
Really trendy restaurant/bar with delicious food and drinks!!
by shanefnd at Citysearch
Went here last Saturday nigth with my family whowere in town for the weekend. The atmosphere and ambiance of Gaslight is really nice. The bar with it's long zinc strip is a really good first impression when you enter. When we moved to the dining area, the french bistro feeling continued with intimate seating and dark lighting, but it was all good! Becuase our table was delayed by roughly 20 minutes, the head waiter provided complimentry cheese fondue with garlic and onion and toasted breadsticks for dipping, along with 2 fresh baguettes to start off with. The meal was really tasty.....and the waiter was extremely nice and had a great sense of humor and character. After the meal, we moved to the bar which was buzzing by that stage and had a few drinks up until 1am. We stayed at this bar rather than moving to somewhere in town where we would have to stand in line for at least 20 minutes on a Saturday night!
- Pros: Atmosphere, service, bar
- Cons: none
