State St. Barbers is fantastic
by captain1971 at Citysearch
I work in the South End and a few of my co-workers have been raving about State St. Barbers. The weather finally got nicer so I decided to check it out. Beautiful space, very nice girl at the front desk. My barber's name was Ben Jr. Great guy, well-spoken. I wanted something professional but not conservative and he knocked it out of the park. I got back to the office and a couple of the secretaries gave me major thumbs up on my new 'do. I'll definitely be paying Ben Jr. another visit in a few weeks.
- Pros: excellent quality, great environment, good value
They compelled me to sign up and write my first bad review.

The entire haircut was spent listening to the guy complain that i was 12 minutes late. For 15 minutes I was lectured like a high schooler that ditched home room. I warned them I was coming from Malden, and that I might be a little late.
They offer you a drink. I got tea...in a styrofoam cup...scorching hot... with tea flakes floating in it. Yum
The haircut itself was fine I guess. The guy didn't cut enough off. That part is my fault for not saying anything, but I didn't want to be in that place any longer then I had to.
He didn't deserve my money, he deffinitely didnt get a tip.
- Pros: If it was cut the right length, I'm sure it would have been fine.
- Cons: Everything else you could possibly imagine. Supercuts is better.
Excellent and Professional Barber.

Classy but comfortable atmosphere. Cut was excellent and professional. Service friendly and warm. Prices very reasonable for the quality. Recommend without hesitation.
- Pros: Value, Service, Cut
Boston Branch Unimpressive
by ned1234 at Citysearch
There are no "sit-in" barbers but they are rather called in when an appointment is made. So the shop is very precise with the timing: you must not be more than ten minutes late or else your appointment is void. Not the most customer friendly in this respect. The quality of the cut varies with the barbers, some are mildly competent while others are unskillful (based on three trials). The shop setting is decent and is reminiscent of a classic barbershop, so this is probably the only nice thing going for it, aside from a free soda (used to be beer) upon arrival. With the new price at $34, this place is for those who value decor over substance. There will not be anymore trial for this reviewer.
- Pros: decor
- Cons: skill, price, customer service
Old-fashioned men's barbershop provides its clients with classic cuts and hot lather shaves.

In Short
One of the city's few barber shops that caters exclusively to men, State Street sports a retro-minded decor, complete with traditional fixtures and hardwood floors. Patrons enjoy a complimentary beverage and poke through papers and mags or engage in friendly banter with the staff. Expert barbers--State Street employs certified barbers, not stylists--provide haircuts and hot lather shaves (each cost $34 and are finished with a quick neck massage).
Now that's a great haircut

I just tried State St. Barbers after a very disappointing experience I had in January at High Street on Newbury. I'm glad I found this place. Everything was so much more professional and the barber was 10 times better! You know how you can just tell who truly cares about what they're doing and who is just trying to earn a buck? I felt like my barber (Nour) really took time to understand what I wanted and then he delivered, big time. I went back to my office and several people were complimenting my haircut. I haven't had that happen before! At $34, I thought it was very reasonable. And I didn't have a hard time finding parking like on Newbury.
- Pros: expert service, elegant decor, easy parking
dressed up supercuts
by boston33 at Citysearch
Overrated. Really just an overpriced and well packaged supercuts. If you have short or buzzed hair, its a nice experience and the complementary beer is a good start, but if you have medium or long hair, it is not the place to go for a real stylist. I will not go back.
Great barber

These guys will give you a great cut. While they give you the quality cut that a Newbury St salon would give, it's got the feeling of a barber shop - they'll even get you a beer while you wait.
- Pros: Great cuts, and open Sundays!
- Cons: Sometimes a wait when you make an appointment
Great experience

I thought this place was fantastic. I was looking for a place where I could get a good haircut but didn't really want to deal with a real foofy salon. State St. is great -- its clearly a guys place, you can have a beer with your haircut, and the guys there know what they're doing. I thought the $29 was well worth it -- they pay plenty of attention and make sure you get the haircut you want.
- Pros: Great environment, great haircut, free beer!
- Cons: Wish it was closer to where I live
the best haircut I have ever had
by calvin2006 at Citysearch
I have just moved to the United states in Boston and I had a previous bad experience with a Hairdresser Shop run by several ladies. Not that I have any thing against women cutting my hair, but I felt more comfortable with a man cutting my hair. So I went to this barber shop and It was a great experience. for $29 they gave me one of the best haircuts I have ever had, plus a hair wash and dry. the employees were very nice, polite, and proffesional. During my haircut they offered me a drink, which I didn't need but I thought was very thoughtful. the shop was neat, nicely designed, and the best thing was the shoulder massage I got at the end. I highly Reccomend this Barber Shop to any guy who truely needs proffessional Hairdresser.
- Pros: easily accessiable, not far from downtown, very good staff
- Cons: appointments reqired
