Surprisingly stylish Japanese steakhouse's Teppanyaki tables attract countless suburban families.

The Scene
With its warm colors and handsome bar area (complete with flat-screen TV), Fuji is about as non-kitschy as teppanyaki-style restaurants get. Diners pass a small sushi bar and fish pond to encounter a half-dozen open grills, around which eager diners sit to be fed and entertained. Colorful chefs flip, slice and dice any number of ingredients while preparing sizzling stir-fries. Those hoping for a calm dining experience should visit after the typical 5-year-old's bedtime, as the restaurant's a favorite of area youngsters.
The Food
While most diners stick to the all-inclusive teppanyaki meals (a choice of meat or fish with grilled vegetables, miso soup, salad and rice), some opt for fresh sushi platters or traditional Japanese entrees like chicken teriyaki and shrimp tempura. Teppanyaki options run the gamut from tender filet mignon and lobster meat to basic chicken breast and nondescript calamari. Desserts include refreshing ginger ice cream and sticky-sweet banana tempura.
