In a city with a lot of pricey subpar sushi, Umi is a really good value for your buck. Been there about a dozen or so times, and so far the sushi has been consistently very good. The fish is always good quality, and they have a lot of speciality rolls that are not too pricey-they certainly can rival speciality rolls found at the more popular restaurants. Downsides-they dont know the meaning of appetizer...they usually dont bring your items out in any particular order, which can be annoying. Service is not spectacular-can be slow, space is small, and they do get swamped with takeout requests, but if you're mostly interested in eating great quality sushi at an affordable price this is the place.

Faced a 1hr+ wait time for the food after ordering. The menu is pretty deep, with some interesting rolls, but they seem much more concerned about their takeout & delivery than their sit-down customers. After 35 minutes waiting for our food, the waitress came around and claimed the kitchen was short-staffed-on a Friday night-and that they have been swamped with takeout orders. Half an hour later our food finally arrived. While tasty, I would have rather spent the wait in my apartment. If you want to try them out (and they're worth it if you want reliable sushi at a great price), pick up your phone.
Pros: Pros: Good sushi & a good value, outdoor seating
Cons: Cons: WAIT TIME for sit-down, outdoor seating (smoking from El Pelon et al)

I went in on a Sunday afternoon and we had great service, but it was not crowded so I cannot speak for busy times. My friend and I ordered three types of sushi and said we would share. Only about 15 minutes later one plate arrived with all of our sushi beautifully arranged complete with an orchid in the middle. It was thoughtful that they went through the effort to appeal to the aesthetics of the food. The waitress was attentive and very nice but not overbearing. It was less than $20 for 3 different rolls. We had the regular tuna, the yellowfin, and the shrimp tempura which was amazing. It is definitely a family-owned place and has beautiful decor. Since I live in the area I will begin ordering take-out from here... probably tomorrow.
Pros: service, sushi, extras, ambience, price
Cons: small place (might get crowded)

I really like the sushi here; I always get it delivered and it comes quickly and is always fresh. You cannot beat their miso soup either: salty with just enough goodies in it to make you keep coming back for more!
Pros: Great sushi and miso soup

I have become a devoted regular at Umi. You simply can not beat the food (cooked or raw), location, or people. On a recent visit, I found out there are new servers, so I'm interested to see how service keeps up. For parking, try the lot across the street, accessed next to Burger King...only on non-game nights. Umi recently started mixing martinis...made with sake! So good! The boats offer a great selection for larger groups. Plenty of non-fish options from noodle dishes (including good pad thai) to chicken katzu. Sit at the sushi bar and talk with the chefs!
Pros: Great sushi and drink selection
Cons: "Cozy" space

Umi used to be one of my favored places to go eat sushi. Conveniently close to Fenway, yet not in the mob during Sox games, decent sushi with fresh ingredients, friendly staff, and a decent selection of special rolls. Service was slow at times, but overall the experience was positive. At one point I was going once a week. Then the last time I went, we went with a party of 5 people. We got there around 6:30, and placed our orders. 6:30 became 6:45. 6:45 became 7. Apparently there was a rush of takeout because we weren't getting served. A man who sat down outside came inside and got served. Some women came in and ordered at the register. And got served. 7 became 7:15. 7 became 7:30. Finally some of us got our orders. 7:30 became 7:45. FINALLY I GOT MY FOOD. Now there wasn't that many people sitting down, and there was a few parties who got served before me even though I had ordered well over an hour ago. When I finally got my food, an hour and a half later, one of my friends mentioned that everyone was done eating before I even got my food. The waitress replied "oh that's okay everyone can share in this one." I was livid. Why they fill their phone orders before people sitting there (including us) is beyond me. Why they filled customer orders before ours who arrived after we did is also beyond me. Waiting an hour and a half to see people being served in front of me with no explanation or acknowledgement of the inconvenience placed upon me is unacceptable. Suffice to say I will not be eating at Umi again. I get better service at McDonald's.
Pros: decent sushi, clean
Cons: service stinks

My roommate and I go to Umi every week usually on thursdays since it isn't as crowded then. They are usually busy on the weekends so perhaps a weekday visit would be best. The sushi here is good. Try andy's special maki! The service is good and they are very friendly. The price is relatively inexpensive and is a great place for cheap japanese foods.
Pros: inexpensive, good service
Cons: no parking

This is truly one of our regulars - a place where eveyone knows our name. Great, fresh sushi. Changing seasonal menu. Miso isn't too salty and Edamame is always just right. Try the Peach Infused Saki - it is yummy and refreshing.
Pros: Sushi, Location, Sake
Cons: , Parking, Busy during BB Games
