Below Average "Dim Sum"

by cecil888 at Citysearch

Below average ...

We went to Jumbo for dim sum and were not impressed with the quality. For examples, the har gau comes in 3 pieces instead of the traditional 4 pieces. The shrimp rice noodle rolls has only one shrimp per roll and in some cases the shrimp is outside the noodle roll. I would say you can find better dim sum in China town or Quincy.

Extreme disappointment

by nayiak at Citysearch

We were completely disappointed at the food quality of Jumbo Seafood after one of our friends recommended trying it out. The food was mediocre for the best dishes, and many of the other dishes were certainly below average. The environment was decent, but certainly not impressive. Many of the dishes were Americanized and not authentic (they did not even have a real selection of tea for its dim sum hours, and only offered a generic tea that had no taste). The price was higher than most Chinese restaurants in Chinatown, but its food quality and environment did not really justify such difference. I would not recommend any of my friends going there.

  • Pros: Decent environment
  • Cons: Americanized food with mediocre quality, higher price

Not Bad

Was actually suprised that the seafood selection is rather limited given their name. Nevertheless, decent food and has very nice ambiance for a chinese restaurant. Nice bar with two plasma TVs.

Dolled-up suburban outpost of popular Chinatown eatery charms Newton families and seafood lovers with fresh, well-executed fare.

The Scene
With its bright, roomy dining areas and a surprisingly stylish bar (two flat-screen TVs provide entertainment), Newton's Jumbo trumps the original Chinatown location in the atmosphere department. Celebratory families crowd around large round tables to devour fish taken from tanks in the rear dining room. Several servers struggle with the language barrier, so plan on repeating your request for soy sauce. The well-stocked bar serves a plethora of specialty cocktails, including several fruity island drinks.

The Food
Befitting the restaurant's name, seafood is the prime draw; live lobsters, bass, scallops, and shrimp are delivered daily. After starting with an order of flavorful pan-seared pork ravioli, consider sharing one of the nourishing house soups (try the velvety minced chicken with corn variety). House specialties include an elaborate Peking duck (served with crepes or butterfly buns) and savory Hong Kong steak with oyster sauce. Tangy ginger ice cream provides a palate-cleansing finish.
