Best Cut and Color in Boston
by BeaconHillerPrep at Citysearch
Wonderful boutique European Salon tucked away on a back street in Beacon Hill, convenient to the Charles MGH T. Owned by posh Brit Claire Torpey who does the most wonderful job with cut and color, all in a warm, friendly environment. Don't mistake this low key neighborhood flair for anything but the most professional cut or color for men and women alike. Other stylists available, too. A wonderful change of pace from Newbury Street.
- Pros: great ambience, music, lighting, warm and friendly, convenient to Charles st shops and T
Great salon services in a special and unique environment.

I have been going to Mayfair on the Hill since I first moved to Beacon Hill. There is such a warm and friendly environment, as well as talented stylists, that I've never felt the need to go anywhere else. Claire does my cut and color and she is as interesting as she is talented. The time flies by with great conversation, fabulous music, and artsy atmosphere. I recommend it highly.
Avoid certain stylists

I live in Beacon Hill - so this salon is very convenient and has more reasonable prices than many places on Newbury. My first experience there was great - but the stylist I had left the salon to go back to school.
My second experience with a stylist named Jessica was the worst haircut experience of my life. Jessica used a razor blade to cut my entire hair - she never even pulled out scissors! I gave her pretty explicit instructions - that I wanted a few inches off, that I like low-maintenance cuts, that I wanted layering in the front - and she basically ignored everything I told her. She gave me a modern/nouveau haircut that looked horrible: my hair was way too short, the ends were all thin and ratty, the front was longer than the back (i.e., she layered the back), and it only looks ok if I take a lot of time to style it (i.e., its high maintenance!). This was the first time I've ever been really upset with a haircut in my life. I would recommend steering clear of this particular stylist if you go to the salon. Also, I called to complain afterwards (I was in tears) -- and was told that by the recemptionist that the owner would call me the next day; the owner never called and I was never offered a refund or a new haircut from another stylist. So I'm not sure the salon is very concerned with listening to and satisfying its customers.
- Pros: Location, ambience
- Cons: Haircut itself, customer service
