Great food, unique dining experience

by bostongirl81 at Citysearch

I had dinner at Cuchi Cuchi for the first time last night. I found the food to be delicious (the Mexican Deep-Fried Tomato and Eggplant Napoleon were my favorite), the ambiance was great for a Saturday night, but the service was definitely hit-or-miss. Maybe the servers feel that the gimmick should make up for not being as attentive, but our waitress was very flippant and seemed annoyed when we didn't order as much as she thought we should. These tapas are very heavy! We ordered five for 4 people and that was plenty (they recommend 2.5 per person). She then gave us the wrong bill at the end of the night, with no apology for almost charging us 3 times as much. The bottom line is that this place is great for dinner if you want good food, a neat atmosphere, and don't mind average service for the night.

  • Pros: Unique atmosphere, great decor, good food
  • Cons: Service is lacking, not the best value for money

Overpriced, pretentious, poor service

by Chris1289 at Citysearch

This is the place to go. If you like pretentious, expensive and poor service that is. They cram too many people into the place. The food is good-looking and apparently made with good ingredients, but it is poorly prepared so despite the expensive ingredients, the food experience is only so-so (in terms of value for your money, it is horrible). When you leave they will charge your credit card another 20% on top of the 18% you already paid them. They claim the extra 20% is to make sure that your account can cover the meal (maybe they have a point with those prices). Oh, and don't bring along a friend who isn't having more than a salad. They require each person to eat for at $20. Right across the street, you'll find one of the best restaurants in town. That place isn't trying to be trendy. But you get three times the food quality for 70% of the price."

  • Pros: Could be worse
  • Cons: Price, food quality, service

Cuchi Cuchi Experience

by LauraandFriends at Citysearch

On Sat. I had planned to have a wonderful evening at Cuchi Cuchi for my husband's birthday. This did not happen. I'm quite disappointed at what happened and the lack of response from management.

I discovered Cuchi Cuchi with friends a few weeks ago, and was captured by the ambiance that night.

Sat. night was completely the opposite, if it was my 1st visit, it surely would have been my last! We arrived at 7:30pm and were told the wait was an hr. All evening long we watched people who came in after us be seated... we inquired with your hostesses thru out the evening the status for our party. We were told 'just another 20 minutes' after 1 hr. After 2 hrs we were told we were the next four top... and we were given bar snacks and a basket of bread. After 2 hrs and 15 mins, we watched another party of 4 who came in 1 hr after us be seated & give the 'okay' sign to the hostess....

3 hours and 8 minutes later at 10:38pm at last we were seated. We ordered 10 different items from the menu, drinks from the bar, and we were rushed by 11:15 to order whatever else we may want because alas the kitchen was closing... we ordered drinks, cappuccino's, birthday dessert & song for our table. At 12:06, Valet was bringing my car up. Imagine that, a 3 hr and 8 min. wait for 1 hr and 28 mins of what was supposed to be a wonderful birthday evening for my husband. It was ruined, far from wonderful & completely disappointing. The waitress Melissa was quite charming and was the best part of the evening... she was the only one who cared and tried to make up for what happened.

Not an owner, or a manager took the time to care or to come apologize for the inconvenience and the mismanagement from your hostess station. Cuchi Cuchi may be a beautiful place but I am completely disappointed in the less than adequate wait and treatment we received on Sat, March 15th

  • Pros: Unique & Beautiful Place
  • Cons: No place is worth a 3 hr wait!!!! Poorly Managed Hostess Station

Fun Atmosphere

by bunheads at Citysearch

This is a really fun place for a date or a small group dinner party. The atmosphere is fabulous! There is a really great selection of drinks and small plate dishes. We have been here a couple of times and had a few amazing experiences and a few pretty good ones. It seems the kitchen can be a bit inconsistent, as we have had the same dishes and they have ranged from tasting out of this world to overcooked. The service is the same, sometimes they are spot on and sometimes they make you feel that they just wished you had never walked in the door. Nevertheless, I would definitely recommend giving this place a shot. And if your first experience isn't amazing, go back, because Cuchi Cuchi is bound to impress.

  • Pros: Fun atmosphere and great food and drink selection.
  • Cons: The service is inconsistent.

Worst dining experience...ever.

by adoralouise at Citysearch

We went to Cuchi Cuchi to celebrate a friend's birthday, her choice of restaurant. Looking back, we wish that we had used our dining expertise to reccomend somewhere else. After getting lost just finding it, we were a half hour late for the group reservation and had cost the group a table. Quel dommage! Hoping that the hostess would understand, knowing their obscure locale, we attempted to explain so that our high-rolling party of 10 could leave the packed bar and be seated. We were met with a scathing gaze, a scornful attitude and a fake accented "No. You are on the end of the list."

An hour and a half and two VERY expensive (though delicious, a small victory) cocktails later, we were crammed into the coat hangers and doing everything we could to get out the way of gaudily dressed waitresses. We were pushed around, spilled on, shoved, and cursed at. When we were finally seated, we were told to "hurry up and order", and to "order a lot, because everything is very small." It seems that every staff member has the requisite fake Gypsy accent, as we overheard one waitress tell a suitor at the bar that he could meet her after her shift, "in the pahkin' lawt". I was rushed into ordering the two least expensive items - marinated mushrooms, which came out last and were marinated in only white vinegar and pepper, and pork roulades, which were small for $12. Other plates tried were the risotto, gluey and heat-lamp warmed on top and cold beneath, baked brie with a metallic aftertaste, chicken liver pate with a strange grit, and worst of the worst, tuna tartare "ice cream cones" which were so lacking in texture that it was like eating a cone of slime. The taste was relatively close to that of bile. We were all so turned off that dessert was out of the question, though our perky waitress shoved menus into our hands. We left as soon as we could and will never, ever return! I'm considering calling the management to inform them what a waste this was of our hard-earned money.

  • Pros: Interesting decor, romantic for small parties, great drinks
  • Cons: Rude staff, terrible food, inflated prices.

terrible bartender

by reviews4cs at Citysearch

My first review on city search, I signed up just to share my experience from drinking at the bar last night for a friends birthday gathering. All I want to say is that the bartender we had was a d****-bag. I would use a different word, but that explains him so well. The answers to my simple drink questions were responded in a demeaning attitude. Other than that I really enjoyed the music and the smell of fresh flowers that were placed throughout. The menu looked great, but after my first time experience, I might consider a different restaurant.

  • Pros: things to look at, bathroom, music
  • Cons: bartending service, ice chunks in martinis

Excellent cocktails, best food around

by pollyguts at Citysearch

We LOVED Cuchi Cuchi! The service was great, people extremely friendly, unique drinks and fun cocktails. they had a great caipirinha, and pisco sour, which I have not seen on any menu outside of Chile or Peru! But the food is really something to scream about- everything we ordered, from the skirt steak to the garlic shrimp to the mushroom risotto was fabulous. Their small plates let you try more items on the menu!! I live in new york and was just visiting Cambridge/ Boston for the weekend.... but am already thinking of my next trip back just so I can go back to Cuchi Cuchi. This was the best meal (food, drinks, fun) I have had in a long time.

  • Pros: awesome food, drinks, great atmosphere
  • Cons: a little pricey, but worth it

Bad service and very mean owner...

by marinayr at Citysearch

I went to Cuchi Cuchi in Feb. of 2006 and everything was spectacular - the food was amazing and our waitress was attentive and fun. I went once again last night (June of 2007) and it was terrible! The food was not as good as the first time, our waitress barely paid attention to us (we had to ask for bread and wave after waiting for a while to finally order) and at the end of the night I hated the Oysters and asked to send them back (first time I ever asked to send anything back at a restaurant!). Our waitress called over the owner who said that she will not take the Oysters of our bill. I was not there to argue and said that that's fine. The process of the owner coming over and arguing (instead of apologizing) about the oysters took about 25 minutes and my boyfriend and I just wanted to leave at that point. I am never coming back and I have no idea what happened to this restaurant! By the way, the owner is a very unpleasant person and has never heard of customer service.

  • Pros: Dirty Martini drink, Atmosphere
  • Cons: Service, Food, Horrible Owner

The best place in Boston

by odrp at Citysearch

In the past month, I have been twice in Cuchi Cuchi and it is now officially my most favorite place in Boston. My GF and I like good eats and have frequented Grille 23 and other top rating City Search places. Guchi's menu is simply better offers better value and better food than all of them.

While it is not the best place to go if you feel like a big steak, the plates are absolutely fantastic and you will definitely not be hungry if you order 2-3 plates per person. My favorites are the Rissoto with Truffle Oil (just amazing), the eggplants with goat cheese, the avocado with crab and some other dishes. If you're vegeterian/kosher this place is perfect for you.

The drinks are also fantastic but since we're not big drinkers we only had 2 cocktails. The ambience is lovely, great staff (although our waitress didn't smile much at the end for some reason) but really what makes it all worthwhile is the terrific food.

I read some reviews here and in other websites about the place which were not impressed with the food - I guess it's a question of whether you're a steak 'n chips type of person or whether you like the fusion/tapas/non-American food. This is NOT a Spanish tapas bar, so the comparison to Dali and the reviews commenting that it is an insult to Spanish cuisine are simply st*pid. The only resemblence to tapas is the fact that you got several dishes, and not a main entre.

If you're international/European in Boston you'd make Cuchi a second home.

  • Pros: Amazing food, terrific value, great ambience
  • Cons: Some dishes might be unavailable if you come too late
