Horrible bouncers

by VilniusRex

I went to this bar for the first time on 3/28/09 for a friends birthday. Small group of us... 3 girls and 2 guys including myself. I had a tab open at the bar in the front room and in the back... and by the end of the night had racked up over $200 between the two... tipping VERY well I might add. For the most part our group kept to ourselves, just dancing and having a good time. Towards the end of the night I was dancing with my girlfriend when out of nowhere a bouncer semi tackles me and draggs me ourside... all the while I was trying to ask him what I did... I wasn't being angry becasue I used to be a bouncer myself and know that approach won't get you anywhere but in the gutter. The bouncer refused to tell me what I had done until we were outside... apparently I had punched a girl square in the face. I had done no such thing and if the bouncer had actually done his job and tried to figure out the situation by listening to me or any of the people I was with, the whole thing could have been avoided. Instead, I was kicked out while the bouncer informed other guests what had happened, and that I was responsible. That's slander right there... and I'll take that up with the management. Anyway, while I'm outside trying to explain to the other doorman that I still had a huge tab running in the bar, the real culprit was discovered and tossed out... yet I was still being treated as if I had done it myself. They would not let me back in to close my tab even after they knew they had made a mistake! (my hand was also cut in the process of being tossed out. for someone who wasn't at all resisting, the oaf certainly used more than enough force to toss me out)

Anyway, with our whole group trying to talk sense to the bouncers about the nonsense of still treating me like I was guilty, and then not listening, I had to get someone to forge my signature at the bar (looking back, i should have refused to pay). I can't say I'll ever go to this bar again... unless it's to knock some sense into a semi-retarded bouncer.

  • Pros: bartenders were great
  • Cons: bouncers have zero common sense

Good Salsa in the Weekday

by Mikesalsero

This place has a pretty good Salsa night on Wednesday night. The only problem is that it's a little hard to find and you have to fight your way through some horrible singing (you'll see). It's in the back room which is actually pretty nice. you can't here the singing from there, thank god but only some really good old school salsa. This is hands down the spot to be on Wednesdays!

  • Pros: good salsa, great bartender
  • Cons: karaoke

Great Tuesday night.

by Boston07

Last night I stopped by Tua Nua after the Red Sox game, expecting to stay for just one drink. They had Rock Band set up on one side of the bar and Nintendo Wii on the other side. While my friends and I waited to play Rock Band we played operation and connect four. I really enjoyed the night and will definitely go back.

Disappointing, RUDE manager

by BostonGirl2008

I went to An Tua Nua last night for a friend's birthday. I hadn't been before so I didn't know what to expect but I was really disappointed. There are so many bars in Boston to choose from, I certainly wouldn't bother wasting my time going back here.

The music was poor. The dance floor was massive but there weren't enough people so you felt ridiculous(and it was Saturday night!!!). There is only 1 bathroom for women by the main bar which means there's constantly a massive line. Once I finally managed to get to use the bathroom I felt like I would catch something, it was so dirty.

The manager (at least I think he was the manager) was rude. My friends and I were joking around with some straws....admittedly not the most mature thing to do but it was his birthday and it was a bit of a long running joke, so the manager got annoyed. Rather than talking to us then and there, he didn't say anything but when we went to buy our next drinks they wouldn't serve us because we'd "had enough". I had only had 2 beers and would be the first to admit it if I had. I asked him about his decision and he was totally obnoxious.

So if you want a place where you can't have a laugh with your friends without being penalized, the dance floor is pathetic and you spend 80% of your evening in the line for the bathroom...this is your venue! Personally, try somewhere else!

  • Pros: Cheap(ish)
  • Cons: Rude staff, constant line for bathroom,

Disappointing Wednesday

by carl_marathon

After hearing a lot about this place I finally went there. Wednesdays seemed to be the best, Karaoke and Salsa--where can you get such a combination. Sadly both were disappointing. Salsa dance crowd had some real unfriendly young women. I've never seen such unfriendly and impolite behavior before at a Salsa club. After this, I decided to go out and check out the Karaoke, after all how much worse could things get. I went to submit a request to the organizer/DJ of the Karaoke, Mac Daddy or whatever, but he just refused to even accept my request. It was around 11:15-11:20 PM and he told me I'm too late. I thought maybe this guy just cannot accept more requests. He however kept accepting taking requests from others till midnight at which point I left. I did feel that perhaps I did not look like others in the place (I'm not white that is). Again, the only people singing were mostly undergrad/grad crowd of young people. I really do not want to say anything really bad in a public forum but when I left the place I felt really terrible and humiliated.

I should add that the Salsa dance floor is great, not too crowded, the regulars are great and very diverse and fun loving crowd, but then there were those young women there (undergrad type), and when guys asked them to dance they acted as if something very wrong had happened, I was actually sitting next to them and heard their conversation and saw their rude behavior. It was perhaps their first visit to a Salsa club but everyone goes for a first time but no one acts so strangely . The outside crowd was different, the staff was fine but Mac Daddy's Karaoke won't get any points from me for trying to be more inclusive. I guess thats one reason why the Salsa and Karaoke crowd do not mix.

One of the B.U. area's favorite pubs offers everything for everyone; every college student and Red Sox fan, that is.

by Contributor

The Scene
On Red Sox game nights, expect a mix of older and younger patrons celebrating a win or drowning their sorrows. Otherwise--when school's in session--this is one of Boston University's most popular bars. Despite the occasional goth or reggae night, you can count on a clean-cut, student crowd dancing to contemporary music.

The Draw
A long, handsome bar serves up an excellent assortment of beers and spirits. The front tables enjoy an open-air view of Beacon Street. When there isn't a Sox game during the day, this is a great spot for a quiet pint or meal. The standard bar menu offers burgers and salads as well as the usual snacks, including heaping plates of nachos and fries. Come late night on weekends, the place gets packed as freshly scrubbed singles shake to whatever's playing.

Still fun despite the cheesy men...

by daria028

On Fri. and Sat., this place is definitely laid back and college party-esque. As long as that's what you're looking for, you won't be disappointed. Nothing here is fancy. The music is pretty much what you would hear at a house party - as in it sounds like someone's iTunes collection with a healthy mix of old favorites but with occasional bad top 40 hit. This is a great place to go if you're with a bunch of friends and you want to grab some drinks and do a little dancing! It's cheap, and you won't have to wait in line for an hour. Do beware of the cheesy men that other reviewers have mentioned - around 1:30am, they start hovering around anything female.

  • Pros: laid back, relatively cheap
  • Cons: desperate men
