Wine...out of a box?
by kkennedy333 at Citysearch
I thought the last time I?d be sipping wine out of a box would be during my residence in Australia. Since the taxes on beer and liquor are incredibly outrageous, broke college students, like myself, were restricted to $9 (AUD) boxes of Franzia. However, back in the wonderful United States of America, and on a slightly enhanced budget, I now look forward to glass or bottle of wine on a slightly different level.
Therefore, I was astonished last Friday night, while dining at Figs in Charlestown (although I am sure it is the same at every Fig branch), to look behind me into an empty bar and witness a stack of various ?flavors? of wine?in boxes. No shame!
I must admit, I am not ?wine connoisseur?, yet I can tell when a $10 glass of Chablis originated from a slippery, silver bag?
Another fabulous meal at Figs

I live nearby so I'm geographically biased to this excellent restaurant, but tonight again proved Figs knows how to do it right. They've recently taken a week to redecorate inside- the changes are subtle but give a great vibe for a fancy dinner that's accessible for anyone. I've gone in running clothes and I've been there straight from the office, and felt comfortable everytime. Anyway, the meal was great. A delicious take on basil pesto pizza will hopefully make it from the specials list to the regular menu (this restaurant does amazing things with carmelized onions). The generous carafe of sangria was a fun departure from the wine list, and a chocolate tart desert was the perfect finish to the meal. The whole thing cost less than $60 and there is enough leftover pizza in the fridge for lunch tomorrow. Check this place out when you have a chance- it's well worth the trip over to Charlestown, and a great way to redefine what a "pizza night" can be.
- Pros: Great pizza, easy going in a classy joint
- Cons: Parking can be a pain- take the 92 or walk from town

In Short
Rarely a calm place to grab a meal, Figs is a local favorite for designer pizzas and salads. After nibbling on oniony focaccia, most diners move on to starters like lightly fried Rhode Island calamari or bacon and spinach salad. The 15 or so thin-crust pizza varieties are big enough for two and include eclectic toppings like figs and homemade chicken sausage. Intriguing desserts (white chocolate challah bread pudding) provide a sweet finish.
Fried Calamari Pizza

The fried calamari pizza is top notch at Figs. The neighborhood is rough for parkers, but if you manage to find a spot the food is well worth the effort.
- Pros: food, decor, crowd watching
Good spot

Always enjoy Figs - Charlestown location. Pizza is consistent, and there is always an interesting new variety on the menu. Staff could be a bit friendlier over the phone for takeout ordering.
- Pros: Menu, Pizza, Location
- Cons: Staff, Noisy
Rude Behavior

We (8) were very disappointed with the food, along with the loss of our reservation resulting in our having to wait (outside in the cold) for 2 hours to be seated. It definitely was not worth the wait
