One of the area's cherished few arthouse and indie cinemas.

by Christine Liu at Citysearch

Indie? Foreign? Film noir-esque documentary with puppets, operatic scenes and splices of arthouse Japanimation? If there's an artsy movie hitting Boston, chances are it's screening at the Kendall. Since 1995, the mid-size theatre (with sweeping double-height lobby) has held the beloved fort for first-run films, and often hosts local premieres, benefit screenings and film festivals. The Kendall is the local outpost of the several Landmark Theatres dotting the country, as part of the largest American theatre circuit dedicated to independent film, foreign language cinema, restored classics and documentaries. Plush carpet, sweet-n-salty concessions and validated parking in the adjacent garage infuse comfort in the pleasant, swirly-purple, mid-'90s-modern space.

best place to catch a movie

by jdliveshere at Citysearch

This is my favorite place to see a movie. I love everything about it from the popcorn, to the seating, to the selection of movies playing.

  • Pros: seating, selection of movies, atmosphere, prices, comfort... etc
  • Cons: i wish it were at havard square instead because it is easier for me to get to.

Boston's classiest "art" theater--large screens, capacious seats and a knockout concession stand.

by Contributor at Citysearch

Inside Track
The two have no formal relation, but the Kendall has certainly filled the hole that the late, great Orson Welles Cinema left when it burned down in the 1980s.

Culture Rating
With a spanking, impressively mod building, Dolby stereo in all screening rooms, large screens and capacious seats, the Kendall is far spiffier than the Orson Welles. But like the Welles, its raison d'etre is to bring specialty films--foreign and independent--to the Boston market.

Hint
While Welles' concession stand was considered the best in town because it sold Cadbury candy bars, the Kendall has taken the upscale concession approach a few miles further: Ben & Jerry's ice cream, treats from Rosie's bakery, espresso and Green Mountain coffee. What else is there to say?

Best Movie Theatre in Boston

by ddrucker at Citysearch

If you like movies, you'll love this movie theatre. Here's why:

1) All the interesting foreign and art films

2) Steeply raked seating. You'll never have trouble looking over the person in front of you.

3) Great sound systems

4) Excellent popcorn, coffee, and other food.

5) Easy access to free parking and the T

What else could you ask for? It's cinematic paradise.
