Eyelid Surgery
Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery or BlepharoplastyEyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, (or, slang, "eye job") is an operation that corrects sagging, or drooping eyelids as well as bags & bulges around the eyes. These conditions develop as a result of laxity of the eyelid skin & protrusion of fat around the eyes. It is not limited to older patients, as many individuals inherit a predisposition toward development of fat pouches at an early age. Excess skin is treated by excision or occasionally by laser resurfacing. If excess fat is present, it can be removed simultaneously. Surgical correction is appropriate for all age groups. In some cases, the condition will be caused by other medical problems such as allergy or thyroid disorders. In these patients, the proper treatment may be medical rather than surgical.
Blepharoplasty or Eyelids SurgeryThe procedure can be performed in Dr. Daniel Townsend's Boston office under local anesthesia.
Upper EyelidsExcess skin & fat are removed from the upper lid through an incision hidden in the natural eyelid crease. If the lid is droopy, the muscle that raises the upper lid can be tightened. The incision is then closed w/ very fine sutures. Because the incision follows the natural contour of the upper eyelid, it usually is inconspicuous.
Lower EyelidsTo remove the fatty deposits beneath the eyes, the incisions are placed just inside the lower eyelid, therefore invisible. After the fat is removed, the incisions may be closed w/ absorbable sutures or may be left to heal naturally. When excess skin & muscle need to be removed from the lower lids, the incisions are placed just below the lash line & the incision is closed w/ very fine sutures.
Facelifts
Facelift ProcedureFacelifts are performed in outpatient surgical centers or in an accredited physician’s office. For mini-facelifts, local anesthesia is most commonly used, w/ premedication to help you relax. For full face-lifts, general anesthesia is often preferred. The surgeon will make incisions inside the hairline at the temple, in front of the ear, then around the earlobe & behind the ear, ending at the scalp area. Excess skin is removed & sagging muscles & connective tissues are tightened. In some cases, fatty deposits are removed from beneath the chin & neck. Incisions are closed w/ small sutures. The procedure may take up to 5 hours depending on whether any procedures are performed at the same time.
Mini-faceliftsMini-facelifts or lower facelifts are not as extensive as afull facelift. We can explain the differences to you during your consultation.

Nose Surgery
RhinoplastyAlso known as Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is an operation to improve the shape & size of the nose so that it is in harmony w/ the rest of the face. Rhinoplasty is essentially a surgical sculpting of the nose & is accomplished by careful contouring of the bone & cartilage giving the nose its shape. At the same time deformities that cause breathing problems & some sinus disorders can be corrected. Most incisions (seamless rhinoplasty) are placed inside the nose where they are least visible. Rhinoplasty is often an enhancement to facial rejuvenation, particularly in the correction of the aging nose (drooping of the tip). A significant “combo” effect is seen w/ facial augmentation in conjunction w/ cosmetic nasal surgery. In most instances, change in appearance can be seen immediately. While the shape of your nose is usually the result of heredity, the appearance may have been altered in an injury or during prior surgery.
Breast Enlargement
Breast ImplantsBreast enlargement, or augmentation mammoplasty, enhances the body contour of a woman who is unhappy w/ her breast size. It may also be used to correct volume loss after pregnancy, or to help balance breast size asymmetries, as well as a reconstructive technique following other breast surgery. While breast augmentation will enlarge the breasts, it will not alter basic defects in breast shape or form. Major asymmetries may be improved but will not be completely corrected. A slight difference in the size or shape of the two breasts is considered normal & should not be a cause for concern. If breast size or nipple position asymmetries are severe then additional procedures to further improve symmetry may be necessary. Long experience w/ this operation has demonstrated it to have highly satisfactory results for the majority of patients who are considered suitable candidates for the surgery. Also known as augmentation mammaplasty, breast enlargement surgery involves using breast implants to fulfill your desire for fuller breasts (breast enlargement) or to restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy (breast enhancement).
Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)The tummy tuck is an operation that is designed to remove excess skin from the abdomen & at the same time, tighten the abdominal muscles. It is indicated in cases where there is laxity of the abdomen resulting in bulging due to abnormal stretching of the abdominal muscles & skin. Unlike liposuction surgery, which just removes fat, this operation involves removal of skin & fat, w/ tightening of the abdominal muscles. For this reason, it is more extensive than liposuction. The actual extent of surgery will depend on the amount of excess skin & the laxity of the abdominal muscles.
Liposuction and Body contouring
LiposuctionLiposuction is a very common, popular procedure. It is designed for the permanent removal of fatty tissue, commonly referred to as “cellulite.” It is an elective procedure that allows the cosmetic surgeon to remove undesirable, subcutaneous fat in isolated areas that do not respond to diet & exercise. These areas include the hips, thighs, abdomen, knees, ankles, face & neck. Liposuction is most successful in people w/ good skin tone who have fatty deposits. It is not a treatment for obesity. If weight gain occurs following liposuction, the fat will be deposited in areas that have not been treated. The procedure can be repeated, if necessary. To maintain the safety of the procedure, there is a limit on how much can be done at one time. A variety of factors can affect the results: Physical condition, genetic makeup, diet, exercise, smoking, alcohol intake, & skin elasticity. The results of liposuction are permanent. If you were to gain a large amount of weight you might note rippling in the treated areas, depending on your skin elasticity. Despite good health & a reasonable level of fitness, some people may still have a body w/ disproportionate contours due to localized fat deposits. These areas may be due to family traits rather than a lack of weight control or fitness. Liposuction slims & reshapes specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits, improving your body contours & proportion, & ultimately, enhancing your self-image.
Arm Lift
Upper Arm LiftOver time, gravity gets the best of us all. Skin that becomes droopy & unattractive can be enhanced through a series of lifts. Lifts can be utilized on most areas of the body from head to toe. Arm, thigh & face are the most common areas while buttocks lifts are growing in popularity. Lifts are also beneficial to stomach-staple patients who lose a large amount of weight & are looking to remove the excess skin that many patients develop. Liposuction can be used in place of an arm lift in special instances where there is excess fat but the skin is still tight. If the skin is loose, however, the only method for correction is the arm lift. The drawback to the lift procedure is the noticeable scarring. Scarring therefore is the trade-off. Many people find that they prefer the scarring over the excess tissue & also find that the scarring can fade over time. Also known as brachioplasty, an arm lift reshapes the under portion of the upper arm, from the underarm region to the elbow. Fluctuations in weight, growing older & even heredity can cause your upper arms to have a drooping, sagging appearance. Exercise may strengthen & improve the underlying muscle tone of the upper arm, but it cannot address excess skin that has lost elasticity or underlying weakened tissues & localized fat deposits. If the underside of your upper arms are sagging or appear loose & full due to excess skin & fat, an arm lift may be right for you.
Thigh Lift
Thigh LiftThigh lift is surgery that removes excess skin & fat from your thighs. The goal of the procedure is to improve the appearance of your thighs by removing the “dimpled look” produced by cellulite. Some surgeons say the procedure is more effective for the front & side thigh areas, less effective for the back & inside areas. The incision does leave a scar at the hip, but it fades in time & can be hidden by a bathing suit. A thigh lift reshapes the thighs by reducing excess skin, & in some cases fat, resulting in smoother skin & better-proportioned contours of the thighs & lower body.
