Shanghai Gate is as good a Shanghai restaurant as I know, and I know some pretty good ones. The flavors are intense, the menu is big, and there are some definitive dishes, like soup dumplings and tea-smoked duck, that are worth the trip in themselves.
Best Traditional Chinese Food Around.
I love this place. I don't know about the guy few reviews below me but service has always been awesome for me. It's natural for people who aren't avid in English to raise their voice when they talk, since it might be how they talk in their language. So if you want to be ignorant and let THAT ruin your experience, please keep away from any Chinese restaurants.
My father cooked me Shanghai food and I've also had some in N.Y. This restaurant is the closest thing to any of it. I usually have the beef and green peppers with rice since their beef is extremely tender and flavorful. I recommend not getting the regular menu, and getting their traditional Chinese menu. Start your meal off with the soup dumplings, or their bamboo w/ pork soup. Any stir-fry they make is fantastic, and if you're a fan of meat, PLEASE try their pork belly. I'm not too hot for their lion's head meatball, but pretty much everything else makes up for it. This is a must-go. Prices are not the cheapest, but the quality exceeds the price.
Awesome food and environment!. I am a typical Shanghainess, and I really enjoy the food there--real Chinese food. I feel their food is sometimes better than Chinatown's. It's good they have some special food sometimes. Definetely go if you are from Shanghai. The only bad point is the restaurant is kind of small, so you have to fit youself in a small space.
Nice change from the typical Chinese. A hidden gem in Allston. I went with several friends and everything we ordered was fresh and very flavorful. Except the calamari - wouldn't recommend it. The diced chicken lettuce wraps are really good. Price is very reasonable, but portions aren't that big. A nice change from the typical Chinese restaurants b/c they have some different items on the menu and spicier dishes.
Horrible service!. All I did was ask if they would make us vegetarian spring rolls (since it wasn't on the menu) and the server (and I use the term loosely) raised her voice and nearly yelled at us! Needless to say, we upped and left. The staff at this restaurant is more concerned with playing cards rather than taking care of business. I would recommend you avoid this place like the plague - unless you like to pay people to be nasty to you.
