Foumami is a blended word calling to mind Buddha (“Foo” in Chinese) and umami (the fifth taste), and this inventive Asian sandwich shop in the Financial District provides a respite from the standard lunchtime fare. A chic, airy dining room and outdoor tables are spots to enjoy modern, Asian-influenced snacks from morning until night. ShaoBing is a house specialty: It's similar to a scallion pancake, but sprinkled with an unorthodox, though delightful, dusting of sugar. You’ll also find katsu chicken (a panko-crusted cutlet) or twists on the familiar, including an Asian-accented Cobb salad--who knew Buddha ate bacon?
