Marisa Iocco, Boston's only Italian-born female chef, salutes Italian-American food at Gennaro's 5 North Square Restaurant in the North End
with a menu she calls MangiAmerica ( "Eat, America" ).
MangiAmerica celebrates the dishes that are the mainstays of the Italian-American table. Marisa pays homage to the soulful hominess and evocative flavors of italian-American cooking.
Because this is food that so often conjures up memories of personalities and places now departed, she has recreated these dishes as scrupulously- and reverentially- as possible. Sunday gravy is simmered for hours and ladled over house-made fresh macaroni. The mozzarella is produced locally. The fish is hand selected daily from the fishmonger. Some dishes are only available family-style-deliberately intended to be shared with and enjoyed by loved ones. (857) 250-0756

Feb. 12, 2011, dinning at Gennaro's, Boston's North End.
My wife and I dined at Gennaro's last night. For the money it was a good choice. Our entrees were good. I got the Jumbo Spinach/cheese ravioli my wife got the Rolled Stuffed Eggplant. What was disappointing was the $10 Cesar Salad that was mostly white salad with few greens ( I should have sent it back). We got a glass of Merlot, the glass was barely half full and the wine was pretty tasteless. Whenever possible my wife and I will split an appetizer and wine (here we saved $18 by sharing a salad and a glass of wine that weren't very good). The staff were very friendly, the location in North Square was nice. We had an early sitting, 6PM, the place was quite and we were also able to get a window seat.
All in all, I can recommend Gennaro.
John, I am happy to hear that your overall experience was a good one. I do wish you would have said something that evening, I would have been more than happy to have found a solutionto the problems you encountered. As an owner it my responsibility to make YOU, the customer happy. I hope that when you come back I could meet you. Thank you for your feedback, do you remember the name of the wine?
Wonderfull Dining Experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Gennaro's; from the location to the view to the service, ambiance and not to mention the food. Hands down one of the top dining spots in the North End!
A great, new find in the North End. We stumbled upon this great restaurant on a historic corner in the North End. Four of us had lunch and each meal was perfect. We all sampled each other's: spaghetti and meatballs, margherita pizza, pannini, and chicken w/broccoli and pasta...all delicious. We will definintely go back and sit by the window...each table has a window with a view.
All I CAN SAY IS WOW!!! BEST IN THE NORTH END. I recently attended WITH best friends. There was ten of us and let me tell you it was first class dining all the way!! The wait staff was amazing recommending a reasonable priced wine that was delicious, the antipasto and dinner specials were out of this world. Every one of us ordered something different off the menu and no one was disappointed. The gravy was fantastic. Although onre of my friends been there before and recomended the STUFED SOLE I don’t think you can go wrong with any dish. I will definitely be back again. A hat off to Gennaro's……
Lovely place in the North end. Wonderful place in a quaint corner of the North End. It's got great ambience, a nice bar, great food and more space than a lot of other places in the North End. Can't go wrong
IMPRESSIVE. Gennaro's is the perfect spot to bring out of town visitors or just to enjoy a perfect dinner out in Boston. It amplifies the essence of the North End in Boston. Each course was presented elegantly. The staff is efficient and friendly.
New Owners - Fantastic Food and Decor. The restaurant is newly renovated - 2 stories. The atmosphere is wonderful. The waitstaff is fantastic - great service and super friendly! The food is delicious. Every time I have gone there I have been so full from the meal that I haven't been able to order dessert!
Excellent Tuna.
Tuna appetizer dish with edamame cooked to perfection, tasty and excellent presentation. Also Lamb was brilliantly executed.
Restaurant is under new management, and currently called Gennaro's 5 North Square, since May 2009. Do not let the old reviews of the previous owner's fool you! This place has been completely transformed into an excellent dining establishment!
