Coppa does not runneth over. A small group of us had intended to go to Toro last night for my birthday dinner, but when we arrived we found it closed for a private party. A waitress who was smoking a cigarette outside and observing our dilemma encouraged us to try their new sister restaurant, Coppa.

I was immediately surprised by how small the space was, but it was early still, and we quickly got a table. The second surprise was the menu--with a list of $5 stuzzi (starters) and main dishes that were shockingly affordable. We started with the arancini from the stuzzi menu ($5 each) and an order of roasted brussels sprouts from the verdura menu ($6 each). Both were delicious but far too little to share among our group of five.

The highlight of the meal was the handmade pasta ($12 each). Mine was delicious, pleasantly chewy bucatini topped with a red sauce that tasted of pancetta and red peppers. Again though, portions were very small, and I could have eaten a bowl twice the size of the one I got.

Next time, I'd go to Coppa for a glass of wine and a bite of wood-fired pizza before a movie, or a snack of salumi and a chat at the end of a night. For a full Italian meal, go elsewhere.

good food, tight space. Wife and I went right after it opened (wed 12/9 7:30 pm)

Lots of pros, a few cons. It was going to be a 45 minute wait (turned out to be about 20). We were fine with the wait, but had problems finding a space to stand near the bar where we weren't in the way of the servers. Good Italian wine choices, amazing food choices. perfect for someone with adventurous taste buds and the same for someone who likes the beaten path. great prices.

Service was fine. Nothing out of the ordinary. Food came out fast (maybe a little too fast), server was friendly.

Tight squeeze at the table - made even tighter when they packed a party of 8 in next to us.

It got very loud at some points, such is life in a small and full restaurant.

Everyone seemed to know everyone, I'm sure that's because it just opened.

I'd probably give it 5 stars during off-hours (as long as they had the octopus back on the menu).

Small place, small plates. A tip from a Toro staffer brought me here on opening night, before the inevitable crowds. Just had a Negroni and though it's made without gin, you'd never know. Can't wait to come back for the food.

Excellent for dinner with fam/friends, a date, or quick bite. Much anticipated... you'll love Coppa for whatever event or occasion you go there for. Excellent variety on the menu suitable for nearly everyone w/ a full bar and friendly staff. Excellent for late night too!

This South End enoteca is casual, tiny, affordable, bustling and locavore-friendly; yet, like that effortlessly cool kid who’s completely oblivious to his popularity, Coppa is also a disarming local joint. The visible kitchen, run by haute talents Ken Oringer and Jamie Bissonette, pumps out stuzzi and wood-fired pizzas; meanwhile, servers deftly maneuvers the skinny path between diners at tables and drinkers at the bar, doling bowls of housemade cavatelli and pouring Barbera with warmth and ease. Unsurprisingly for a place named Coppa (a traditional Italian cured meat), there’s dedication to the craft of salumi (like housemade mortadella and lengue), and animal protein’s role on the menu (braised oxtail and bone marrow pizza, sweetbread saltimbocca, seared foie gras with kumquats) is extravagant and inventive.
