Best Italian in Boston – Sweet Basil is better than any of the pricier North End eateries I've tried. I love the no frills atmosphere, the pesto on the table and the innovative Italian cooking. It is one of my favorite Boston restaurants!
Comforting and delicious – I've been frequenting SB with my wife for 3 years, and we've had nothing but great food experiences there. Starters are eclectic, entrees are more mainstream. Although the cacciatore is owner Dave's signature dish, I'm partial to the his take on bolognese -- exceptional. Portions are huge.
The space is crowded and loud, but the staff has always been friendly to us, and Dave even comes around at times to chat and try out new menu twists. This is a friendly neighborhood place, with a wonderful owner who dishes great food in large quantities at reasonable prices. Not a shee-shee 5 star Italian place that will cater to those who expect a private waiter, sommelier, and valet parking.
Bring some wine and good friends--you'll have a great time with delicious food and feel like you're eating in the kitchen with your Italian grandmother who wants to keep feeding you more.
Slow, noisy, with attitude – We just had the worst dinner at Sweet Basil. It was as noisy as a construction site, our food took over an hour to come after we ordered. The waitress gave us attitude about the slow service. There was a very cold draft from the open front door. The tables were so cramped that two other tables knocked over wine glasses, nearly cutting a little girl at an adjoining table. The food was good, but not anything special. They only take cash, which is annoying. We certainly won't be back.
Good Eats! – great food, great atmosphere, there was a wait, but hey, all good resturants have one. good sized portions. Good place to go with some friends for a good meal.
awesome – Good down home Italian made with all natural ingredients. Large portions you never go away hungry and you ache for more.
