Great for a relaxer, not for a cut.
At the recommendation of a few friends, I went to Olive's for a relaxer twice. They do a roller set before the blow dry, which gives you hair some volume and a break from heat. The conditioning treatments are great.
I was a bit concerned about my haircut when the stylist commented that my hair was "lots of different lengths," and then it took her a minute to realize those were layers! My cut was disappointing...I sort of ended up looking like that lady from Dilbert with the triangle hair, to be honest.
The atmostphere wasn't as professional as Newbury Street, but I've had A LOT worse. The stylists were extremely friendly. Bring a book and be prepared for a bit of a wait, especially if you go on the weekends. They cater to mostly African American clients, but there were plenty of other races there too! I wouldn't get my hair cut there again, but this place is great for relaxers, blow dries, and conditioning treatments.

If you have curly hair, this is the best place to go!.
I found Olive?s thru an online search for hair relaxers in Boston. After visiting their website and watching their spotlight on Chronicle I knew this was the place I wanted to go to. Olive, the salon founder and creator of her own relaxer, had won multiple awards and hair shows. Their aim to maintain the health of hair and their long term clientele really set my mind at ease about relaxing my hair for the first time.
I have never had such a wonderful experience at a hair salon. I have very long very curly hair and while people on Newbury can "handle" it, they never make me feel like they're happy about it. Not the story at Olive's. The staff here is so down to earth and educated in all the different types of curly hair and hair textures (soft, coarse, etc). For once, the hair stylist knew more about my hair than I did!
First they applied the relaxer for about 15 minutes and I felt no itching, as I had heard I might. I think they said they do ?off the scalp? application. After that they gave it a protein conditioner and set it (put it in curlers & dried it under a hat-type hair dryer). It came out feeling like silk. My regular salon on Newbury uses Kerastase products on my hair, which I use myself at home, and my hair had never felt as healthy and soft and silky as after the protein conditioner and set at Olive's. I will definitely go back here anytime I need my hair done in the future or even just for some hair pampering! Highly recommended!!
