Vegans, vegetarians, and other health-minded diners head to West Newton for faceless (but not tasteless) Asian cuisine.. The Scene
Located on a quiet suburban side street, this vegetarian haven has developed a loyal following mostly by default--as there aren't too many options for the area's vegans and vegetarians. Expect an evenly split crowd of earthy granola types and Asian families. There's little by way of atmosphere (the dining room resembles an unassuming cafeteria), but with low-low prices and such specialized cuisine, no one seems to mind. Friendly servers do their best to explain the difference between veggie scallops and veggie shrimp.

The Food
Life & Light's kitchen somehow manages to squeeze out over a hundred vegetarian menu items using only gluten, tofu and textured vegetable protein (the latter doubles as chicken, fish and meat). These ingredients are paired with familiar vegetables and sauces to yield surprisingly tasty--and unequivocally healthy--results. Sweet and sour veggie chicken and spicy kung pao veggie squid may actually make you forget about the real thing.

Delicious food, friendly service!. YUM! Delicious food, friendly service!

Sure the decor leaves a little to be desired, but actually it's charming in a way. You don't need fancy digs to enjoy a fabulous, value-priced and healthy meal -- just focus on the unassuming neighborhood vibe and the OUT OF THIS WORLD meal!

so-so. The food was okay, but everything was greasy. That's something you don't expect from a "light" resturant.

Vegetarian Oasis. The array of vegan "meats" this restaurant offers is mind-boggling. The food tastes great and is good for you. Everything is made without animal products (milk, eggs, butter...). They also sell some of their ingredients for home use. The setting isn't too romantic, but down to earth and refreshing. I would definitely recommend this place.

Best Vegan in Boston area!. This is clearly the best all vegan restaurant in the Boston area. The decor is very plain but the food more than makes up for it. Best dishes include the sesame beef (we ALWAYS get this one), tangerine beef/chicken, hot and spicy fish, and sweet and sour pork. We usually get the "fake meat" dishes but have been pleased with tofu dishes and other vegetable dishes. The appetizers are amazing as well. The service is fast and friendly and prices are reasonable. You cant be vegetarian in this city without eating at Life & Light- its a must.
