Skipjack's Newton. Although the fish was fresh, the tuna I had was very bland. My fiance spilled a drink and had to clean the table herself. The waiter did not offer her a replacement drink but he did not forget to charge us. The waiter messed up on the order and brought the main course over 1 minute after bring over the salads. The waiter was young and very inexperienced. I would not go back.
One of Newton's favorite spots for seafood serves fresh fruits of the sea to casual suburban families..
The Scene
The most suburban location of the local seafood chain attracts families and seniors. Those waiting for a table can hang out in the attractive bar area, complete with a pair of TVs. The extensive wine list includes many half-bottled bargains. Cheerful waiters are familiar with the ever-changing selection of fish available.
The Food
Skipjack's tries its hardest to match up with other, better-known chains in the area, and it succeeds in some departments. An on-site sushi chef prepares fantastic sashimi and rainbow rolls, both of which make for exceptional appetizers. More conventional starters include clam chowder and several house salads. Entrees are affordable given the amount of fish you're given. Huge cuts of arctic char and mahi mahi go well with the house vegetable medley and a tangy peach salsa, respectively. Land-lubbers can opt for steaks or chicken dishes. Desserts are surprisingly strong; the chocolate bread pudding is a rich closer.
Accessible suburban seafood. I have eaten here two times and was very impressed initially but on my last trip was disappointed with the service which was relatively inattentive. The gingered fried calamari appetizer was delicious and was of a generous size. The sea bass was scrumptious. I was less impressed with the coconut-crusted shrimp, and I found the sushi was mediocre in quality. On the whole, prices were reasonable for the portion size and quality of food.
what a rip off!. The music was so loud we could not hear each other talking. when asked to lower it, the manager said certainly. and never adjusted it. this happened three times within our one meal. additionally, the restaurant tacked on unknown charges when the bill came that amonted to over 25 dollars, ie a cake fee, corking fee for the wine ordered etc. when asked about it the manager was rude, condescending and unhelpful. Skipjacks was a huge disappointment and had some of the worst customer service i have experienced in the boston area. its a disgrace that they charge so much for dull and over salted food. the salads were very small in size and the prices high. additionally the entrees were not of very good quality.
Cold, dead fish. There's no other way to put it, what a rip-off. If you like a very expensive, poorly cooked piece of fish, this place is for you.
