The Scene
With its old-fashioned soda fountain and Formica tables, Johnny's offers area families a colorful, unique and affordable destination for lunch, dinner and all-day breakfast. Offerings like matzoh ball soup and turkey Reubens expand the menu beyond the usual diner fare. Kids indulge in pleasing finger foods (hand-cut sweet potato fries are a must). Weekend breakfast and brunch is a local institution, so expect a wait. Youthful servers are quick to refill water glasses and coffee cups.
The Food
Like all great diners, Johnny's serves up a breathtaking assortment of dishes, perfect for large families. Garden-fresh salads are large enough to share, as are hefty deli sandwiches of the sinful (buttery, grilled Monte Christo) and saintly (savory low-fat pastrami) varieties. Hungry diners gravitate to the roast turkey dinner, which includes enough potatoes, stuffing, gravy and bird to feed a small family. A frothy egg cream from the fountain provides a fitting dessert.

Johnny's has been around for a long time in Newton. We eat there a lot, because it's one of the few places that we know everyone from our 5 year-old to our 70+ parents will be happy! There's something for every taste and everything is prepared fresh, with whatever you want added or deleted. Truly your way cooking. There is a 50's Burger for the full sat fat experience, complete with greasy fries and a frothy frappe (N.E. talk for Milkshake)! There is also healthy food, like granola with fresh fruit or fat free items. Breakfast all day is fabulous! Try the crunchy French toast for a twist on a favorite you thought you knew! The only bummer is the price and the wait, if Boston College is in session.

The best hamburgers with fries in town. I would go their more often if the service was slightly quicker though. It's worth going their once, for the food. It, of course is only good for a casual meal, or if one is very hungry, thanks to the portions.

Fun place for the kids but the food was very average. Burgers came luke warm and very greasy. Soggy fries.
