“great little restaurant out in the country”
“We asked to speak with the manager, he was not on duty, we were promised that he would call us to adjust the bill for the service and cold food.”
“When we were served after a prolonged wait, the food was luke warm at best and the service was untypically slow.”
Can't quite hit the mark. The Sun Tavern could be a great restaurant and it's hard to figure out why it isn't. It's a wonderful old building on a pretty property. It has a fun history. It's perfectly quaint and cozy inside. Some dishes are fabulous. But for every good dish, there's a mediocre one. We have eaten at Sun Tavern off and on for over 20 years, including many times during the present ownership. This past week, my wife had a Caeser salad that was perfect and a coconut shrimp that was heavy with oil. My calamari was good, although sligthly overcooked. My wife's squash ravioli with chicken was perfect but my seafood jambalya was a gluey mess with horribly overcooked mussels. This situation is pretty typical at Sun Tavern. No one asked if we liked our food during the meal. Finally, it is very odd that the owner who is very present rarely visits the tables. Perhaps he is happy with running a pretty good place and doesn't want to know that it could better.
Absolutely Fantastic!!. We ate there this past Saturday and although we didn't have a reservation (I would make them next time) we were told it would be about 20 minutes. We had a drink at the bar and in 15 minutes the hostess came and got us and brought us to our table. We were almost sad to leave the tavern area it is so relaxing. Once seated the service was fantastic and the food was some of the best we four had anywhere including Boston.
Excellent!.
Geez, if that 2/6 reviewer Jon can give this a one star rating I wish they would review something he thinks is good. Not only was service to us courteous and quite attentive, the food was fabulous. From salad to filet mignon to desserts the chef had excellent and unusual presentations. We absolutely got what we paid for.
Our food was hot, portions average to large. This ain't no Applebee's. We're not townies, we had to drive 25 minutes to get here. We saw some upper-crust Duxbury people there and we saw some folks in old jeans. Neither of them could detract from our experience.
Different owner, same great Sun Tavern experience... better I'd say.
Sun or Sun"down" Tavern.
Food was cold, small portions, and seemed expensive for the quality (Applebee's quality at best). All four guest ordered 4 different meals and all were less than satisfied.
The wait Staff was friendly and courteous. However, Food did not arrive until 45 minutes after ordering. Tables were tight, even though some were not occupied.
We all felt like second class citizens to the "regulars or townie" who seem to occupy most of the dining staff and owners attention.
I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone who happen to reside outside the town limits of Duxbury.
New owner, same name, same old food. Good luck!
Excellent Food!!.
The new owners are great! The service was prompt and friendly. The food was fantastic.
All four guests in our party enjoyed our meals (four different entrees) and our desserts (four different). We are looking forward to trying the new Sunday Brunch now too.
Worst customer service and cold food.
My wife and I used to frequent the Sun Tavern as it is just a mile or so from our home. Generally the service and food were good. However, we arrived one evening to have a quiet dinner. The host was eating her meal at the coat check and seemed put off that we wished to be seated. When we were served after a prolonged wait, the food was luke warm at best and the service was untypically slow. We asked to speak with the manager, he was not on duty, we were promised that he would call us to adjust the bill for the service and cold food.
I made many calls to the manager and sent emails regarding our experience to no avail. If you are interested in a 1-2 star meal at 4 star pricing this is the place for you. We will not be returning.
User review by mstreeter. We had a wonderful dinner at The Sun Tavern recently. True gourmet menu. I haven't had duck as crisp and flavorful in a long time. My husband had a chicken dish that had butternut squash ravioli. Very quaint and homey feel. Very friendly service.
User review by dbowen61. A wonderful old place witha warm atmosphere, great food and friendly service. The menu selections are varied, there are items you will see nowhere else. They also have some lovely pinot noirs.
