A good place to cut hair for the Asians.
As I was so disappointed with my first experience with a high-end Back Bay hair dresser, I did not have too much hope but wanted to do something about my hair. I've read several reviews about Zen hair about the Asian hair and decided I was going to try out.
Honestly speaking, I worried quite a bit and even regretted I came to cut my hair before the owner started to cut my hair as the place was not the cleanest.
But as he cuts my hair, the change was already apparent within 5 min. I have to say, I really love how my hair looks.
Perhaps, this place is better for the Asian hair as too much thinning is probably not favored by the non-Asians.
Owner is nice but his technique isn't that great. I tried to communicate to him what I really wanted, which was longer layers and not so much shredding (the last person who cut my hair thinned it out way too much). I think he overbooked people and therefore was rushing through my haircut. For $40 I got a haircut that I basically could've done at home myself. He did not use a razor, my hair was cut too blunt and did not blend in. When I came home and used a straightener I found that there were some parts that were longer than the rest...so it was really uneven. He is a really nice guy and very friendly but I think he pretty much cut my hair like a white person would...which is to say he really doesn't know how to cut asian hair. I would not recommend this salon at the price that they charge.
Cheap for a reason.
I had my haircut done here recently after reading several positive reviews about Fred. What to say of the experience? Fred was definitely very skilled and detail oriented. He understood each person's hair type, and what style would fit them best. The staff is pleasant and friendly.
I'm giving the place a below average rating due to the quality of the service provided. It can be categorized as "anything goes" - poor attention to the customer, one person working several customers' haircuts at once, no respect for timelines or appointment schedules. I've read somewhere else that he had kept one person waiting for an hour plus.
My haircut could have been so much better had Fred taken the time to focus on it. Instead I got a really sloppy "mall" cut and will need to revisit yet another hairstylist again to fix it. Hey, the price is cheap for a reason.
Great hair cut at a great price!. Freddy is wonderful! I used to work in a salon for a long time and I can't say I've ever seen a stylist who takes as much care as Freddy does. He pays great attention to what you want and is also realistic about your at-home styling needs. He is very good at taking a standard-type cut and giving it a funkier edge if that's what you like. I've also been very impressed with the color as well. The best part is that it's such a bargin! Zen is the best-kept secret in Boston, if you ask me.
An art form. Freddy is amazing! He is so skilled and detail oriented. He will not allow a hair to be missed. He is affordable and really great.
WOW. I called on a day when zen was closed. He opened up and cut my hair for me! It was 25 dollars. He only used a razor. It was AWSOME. I love zen hair and will never go anywhere else. It's affordable, and the attention to detail is so satisfying!

Waste of time and money. this hair salon is by far, the most awful i've ever been to!!!!! it was a violation to have my hair treated there. not only was the staff rude to me, they completely botched my haircut. the stylists there are not proficient in english, thus there was no way to inform them of the hair style that i wanted. instead, they put their own punk-grunge-japanese twist to it, and i ended up coming out a poodle!!!!! and they charged me $150 for the whole thing. i honestly wanted to walk out without paying, i felt so awful about the result!
