Editorial Review for Paradise Rock Club – by Citysearch Staff
In Short
The Paradise remains one of the city's most unique and rewarding venues to catch bands: Its small size (it boasts a capacity of around 500) casts performances from big-name acts in an intimate light. Future mega-stars such as U2, Van Halen and the Police all made their first Boston-area appearances here. Whether you're on the floor or peering over the balcony, the stage in the main room is constantly in sight. You can also be assured of decent bar access, along with a place to check your coat.

Insider Tips
The ExtrasHit the Paradise Lounge (connected to the club on both levels) for good pre- or post-show grub, or just a different vibe.
Save TimeIf the main stage-level bar is packed, head upstairs to one of three quieter, less-heavily frequented bars.
Know Before You GoPlanning on drinking? Take the T, which stops right out front. Plus, concerts rarely extend past midnight, when the trains stop running.

The sound is o.k. compared to other small sized venues in town, and the small size is a good way to get intimate with the bands. There are two down sides to the venue. First, the security and staff at the venue are complete jerks. I have never been to a show there where I wasn't pushed, shoved, or yelled at by someone working there. And I'm a fairly harmless person. The security are gestapo style who get in the face of anyone who starts dancing or moving around, and the staff are never helpful and all have attitude. The second problem is the lack of a reliable box office. They occasionally are available at the Orpheum, but I don't think they even sell them anymore. That means we have to pay the $10-15 service fees from ticketbastard to go to shows at the Paradise. Totally not worth it. Their web site is awful, and they don't post box office hours there. I have dropped by many times to find the box office closed, and unable to buy tickets. If they were smart, they'd supply the bartenders next door with some tix, like most other small clubs.

In a larger venue the crowd starts to bunch up near the stage to get a quality look at the act on stage. At the 'Dise, you can be in the bathroom and still have a great sight line to the stage. An exageration, only slightly. You are right up on the stage with the band. There isn't a bad spot in the room. the sound is always a tossup as some majors bring in their own super-genius soundtechs but, any night you are likely to hear an excellent mix of presence and clarity. It gets crowded for sure, but you can always find a spot or two to hang out in. this is most certainly a rare scene. You are within reaching distance from the stage and they don't usually oversell the house. Never a bad show at this place.
Pros: super cool close-in layout
Cons: parking is a bit of a bummer
