Closed -- reopening as House of Blues in late 2008.. Closed -- reopening as House of Blues in late 2008.

The Scene
Avalon has gone through many changes over the years, as its owners have changed its name and decor every decade. It was Boston-Boston in the '70s and Metro in the '80s. With the most recent makeover, it's now bigger, badder--and the closest thing to a big-time New York club you'll find in Boston. Up-to-date music blares from a first-class sound system, accompanied by lots of lights. The stylish crowd is evenly divided between students and professionals.

The Draw
Catch a rock band early in the evening, go home and change, then come back after 10pm to dance until 2am. Thursday's International Night lures a large foreign-student crowd, while on Fridays "Avaland" features top-notch local and acclaimed national DJs (Paul Oakenfold, Armand Van Helden). More local DJs pump up Saturdays, and Sunday's Gay Night is legendary, as seemingly all of Boston's most beautiful gay men show off their ace dance skills.

Avoid if the show is sold out. Avalon oversells every concert. I've been to 2 sold out shows there in past 2 months and both times you could barely get into the room. Pushing, shoving, and yelling. Just gross. I went to few sold out shows after the fire at The Station in RI and you could get in and around, get to the bar and actually stand on the floor without feeling like a lemming. Since then the numbers have steadily creeped up... Sickening.

Basically if the show is sold out I won't go. It's not like you'll see the show anyway.

DO NOT see a concert here. I went to see Martin Sexton, an incredible artist. Avalon over-sold the venue and it was impossible to see, never mind dance to the performer! The venue was highy disappointing.

FANTASTIC NIGHTCLUB. Last night I went to Avalon for the first time. A bunch of my friends are regulars so I decided to go along. It's a fantastic club! The drinks are excellent. Great bartending service. The crowd is trendy and there's a dress code, which is fine with me. The dj was really good. I enjoyed the music alot. It's a great atmosphere, great location, pretty much great overall. I will go to Avalon again. My friends were right.
