Editorial Review for Boston Beer Works – by Eric Grossman
The Scene
Your experience at this original Beer Works depends on the time of year: Baseball season brings lengthy lines and standing-room crowds, but the huge, neo-industrial dining areas sport plenty of empty tables between November and March. Sox fans and college-aged beer connoisseurs enjoy an ever-changing assortment of 16 beers on tap--massive kettles produce award-winning brews, like the colorfully named Bambino and Bluebeery Ales. Service can be exceptionally rushed and distracted when the place is packed.
The Food
An epic menu ranges from healthy and nourishing (freshly made salads, grilled swordfish steaks) to fried and offbeat (sour cream and chive fries, fried pickles). Most patrons gravitate to shareable bar snacks like jumbo buffalo wings (bone-in or boneless) and beer-battered onion rings. Gigantic burgers require two hands, but the truly famished tackle steak tips or a pound of juicy, marinated turkey. Few have room for oversized desserts like the "Big Dig" brownie sundae.
Hits
With few dining bargains in the Fenway area, the Beer Works is a wallet-watcher's dream. Many portions are intimidating in size--after splitting one appetizer and entree, you'll probably need to give your stomach a rest.
Misses
Unlike the Beer Works' North Station location, this one doesn't have any games or activities (e.g. pool tables), so if you're not into the game, there's little else to help pass the time.

Insider Tips
What to DrinkBeware the Hercules Strong Ale--the barley wine has a lethal alcohol volume of 11.5 percent.
ParkingForget about driving when the Sox are in town: Most area meters become towing zones, and area lots charge exorbitant amounts.

I was absolutely horrified by the Fenway location. While we were eating dinner, they were cleaning dust out of the AC vent in the ceiling by hitting it with a broom and letting it rain down right where food was coming out of the kitchen. When we mentioned to the waitress that we thought it was disgusting, she sent the manager over (who was the one doing the dusting) who basically told us to shut it, that they were taking "all precautions" and then went back to hitting the vent and raining dust over the food coming out. After he finished with that task, he took a scraper to a counter with upturned glasses on it, scraping off god knows what, spewing it onto the glasses. All of this, in plain sight, AFTER we complained. Makes me wonder what they do in the kitchen. On top of that, the waitress was incredibly slow and the chicken fingers were overcooked to the point you coundn't bite into them. They're dirty, rude, and have terrible service. I will never go back.
Pros: beer
Cons: dirty, terrible service, rude manager

This place on their rotating menu has such a wide variety of beers, from fruit flavors like blueberry and watermelon to Fenway-themed brews. This is definitely one place to order a beer sampler. The menu of classic American ballpark dishes is just as tasty (the nachos are my favorites), but come hungry if you plan to order. Portion sizes are HUGE here. Only downside is that there are often long lines if you want a table and parking is hard to come by on game days and weekend nights.
