Authentic Mexican Gold Mine.
I discovered Sol Azteca by word of mouth. Thank God! I have continued to visit this quaint cantina at least 10 times a year. They make the best Sangria in the world. It is a blend of red wine, fresh fruit and a touch of brandy. It goes down smooth and warms you head to toe.
The hand painted tile tables and antique decor on the walls is just right to set the mood. When your food comes, you can tell in the first taste just what a gold mine you have discovered.
This is not fast food. All freshly made and baked in ceramic dishes. The Carne Asada is divine and the Enchiladas so delicious and delicate. The sauces are so flavorful. The salsa is hot! But it is fresh and you can see the ingredients and taste each one of them (not a soupy red dip). Thick and savory.
Get ready to be awaken to a new Mexico!
What is the big deal? Am I missing something?.
I had been to Sol Azteca a few years ago and wasn't that impressed then either. I decided to give it another try. The food was bland. It didn't have much taste. I ordered the Taco Frito and the Quesedilla combo. Sure the portions were plentiful and the other food items looked very colorful however the actual entree was rather dull.. I left feeling like I was missing something oh I know THE TASTE. Also for the price of a dish $12.95+ you can't split an entree with your companion.
Perhaps I am looking for a more americanized taco taste if that the case then I sure won't get it at Sol Azeteca. I will not be back, two times disappointed is enough for me.
Good Mexican Food at a Sit Down Restaurant. This place is pretty good when it comes to the food. I recommend it if you have the money and are willing to try mexican that isn't exactly traditional mexican food. I'm not saying that the food is bad (it's definitely great to eat), but this restaurant has interesting twists on some of the plates. The one thing that threw me was the fact that the quesadilla was deep fried. It seemed more like an empanada than a quesadilla in form. It was still really good though. I liked the different style, but it just wasn't a quesadilla to me. Also, I was a little disappointed that they didn't serve any of the traditional drinks... I really wanted to have some horchata with my meal, but they don't make it. Even still, I would go back to Sol Azteca at any instant (at least if I have the money).
The most authentic Mexican dining experience in town..
The Scene
Having served award-winning Mexican cuisine since 1974, Sol Azteca (there's another location near the Fenway) enjoys a loyal following. With exposed-brick walls and traditional fiesta decorations, the subterranean dining rooms all share a casual, homey atmosphere. Congenial waiters take pride in their service. Beware the acclaimed house sangria--its lethal.
The Food
This is not a shopping-mall Mexican restaurant. Corn tortilla chips and a muy picante house salsa greet diners after they sit down. Superb starters include fresh, creamy guacamole and a smoky queso asado (a blend of three cheeses, baked with sliced chorizo). As for the entrees, a combination of enchiladas rojas (beef with red sauce), verdes (shredded chicken with green tomatillo sauce) and poblanas (chicken with fantastic mole sauce) can't be beat. The light, homemade flan (caramel or vanilla) is perfect for dessert.
Great Food.
Sol Azteca has the best authentic Mexican food in the city of Boston. It really is a memorable culinary experience. I travel quite a bit for business, and it's some of the best that I've had outside of Southern California or Texas. The mole sauce is amazing.
The service, at times, can be a bit spotty, but generally it is very good. They can get very busy, though, so it can be a bit hard to get in there, sometimes, especially on the weekends.
The drink prices are good, and they certainly don't go light on the pour, so be prepared. I highly recommend Sol Azteca.
Yummy but Bad Service. This place has good food but the service is terrible. Every time I'm there it takes them forever to sit you down, even when its half empty. Once you sit down they don't come to the table until 15 minutes have passed by. I guess they can get away because they know people love the food. The Cadillac margaritas are really strong! Don't drink them if you need to drive. The flan is amazing, but get the regular one, not the coffee flavored one.
You Won't Be Disappointed.
I have been going to Sol Azteca since it first opened (about 3 times a year). The food is authentic Mexican fare, so if you're expecting Tex-Mex Taco Bell this place is not for you.
The waiters are of Mexican descent and have always been courteous to me and my friends and family.
The restaurant is set up so there are waiter stations in each room. Drop a fork and the waiter will be there with a replacement before you look up.
I recommend anything with a mole sauce, it is the best I've ever tasted and I've spent a lot of time in Texas.
For drinks the best value is the Cadillac Margarita. If you're driving limit yourself to one.
It takes about 1 hour for the entire meal (with dessert and drinks).
Relax and have a good time and a great meal.
It's a Must Have!.
This is one restaurant that I must fit in at least once a month. Everything is good! If you want authentic Mexican.
this is for you........
poor service. The food at Sol Azteca was great, but i will never be back. The service was S-L-O-W and it wasn't even crowded. There's no reason why a simple meal (no appetizers or desert) should take almost 3 hours there!!
Happy Customer.
We stumbled upon Sol Azteca last Friday night looking for a nice summer spot to unwind and have a decent meal, and hit the nail on the head. The service was impeccable - friendly, casual, and not overly obtrusive. The patio was perfect for the hot, muggy night, and the Sangria was divine. The chiles rellenos were delicious and VERY reasonably priced, and the shrimp in coconut milk were out of this world.
This may not be the fanciest or most pretentious place in town, but the quality/ambiance/price ratio is perfect, and you will leave feeling happy and relaxed.
