Tips for ImprovBoston

Really awesome improv. I went to see both the Night Cap and Wednesday night show (the name of which Citysearch is not letting me write, claiming it's inappropriate, even though it's totally not...i.e. rhymes with "Bump Show" and refers the the day in the middle of the week) at Improv Boston and they are both really good. The Night Cap is a great place to see up and coming talent and is great for anyone who likes an open mic style show. When I saw the Wednesday show, Improv Jones Boston was performing and gave a really energetic performance. Definitely one of the top places in town for improv.

Best improv in Boston. Improv is really hard - I've seen most of the major troupes in the U.S., and even the best of them have off nights. If you doubt how hard it is, try making up funny things on topics you get from elsewhere with about 3 seconds to think about it.

ImprovBoston ("IB" to the cognoscenti) is one of the really good troupes in America. Or I should say they consist of some really good troupes. The ones I have seen most are The Family Show (some of the best entertainment for kids ever, or for adults who don't like off color jokes and words), Ruckus, and TheatreSports.

So here is what I mean by good. The improvisers are professionally trained and experienced. They take their work seriously. When a skit isn't working (and trust me, skits in improv sometimes just don't work), they bail out fast and go on to something else. They engage the audience. And they work really, really hard.

Improv isn't standup. There is no memorized routine, no retelling and retelling of the 27 jokes that seem to work. It is a high wire act. When it works it is breathtaking to behold. And at IB it works far more consistently than at most of the improv I have seen, and certainly way more conssitently than at the other improv groups in Boston.

OK but nothing special, I'll try again. It was OK but nothing special but if you like improv it was better than the Improv Asylum and the Actors were more professional.

not what i expected. the club was WAY to loud, the waitress was bossy and to be honest very rude. she showed no interest in the costumers whatsoever, it was ver irritating. everyone was too loud and drunk so i couldnt enjoy the show. if you want to actually hear the comedians, i dont suggest going here.

overall it wasnt a very entertaining night, i wasnt happy with what i saw

ehh. Improv Boston was a fair club, the service was medicore. There was ALOT of noise due to the large amount of drunk people there were there. That kinda ruined the atmosphere, and the show for me.

Not bad, but not amazing.. I agree with MJ6445 that the show was pretty loud and the audience became distracting, but other than that the show was alright. I wouldn't jump at the opportunity to see another show there but it wasn't a bad show.

Too drunk and loud.. I went to the Improv and I won't be going back again. The crowd was too drunk and loud for me to even hear the comedians on stage! They may have been funny but the audience was too distracting to tell.

Improv = No Two Shows Are The Same. I have been lucky enough to be a part of the ImprovBoston family for several years now, and have seen hundreds of performances there. After moving from Inman Square to a new and beautiful place in Central Square this year, IB now offers fifteen different shows a week, ranging from sketch to stand-up to improv to scripted plays. There are two stages (a 100 seat main stage and a 40 seat cabaret stage) and a beer and wine bar. The bar has been a tremendous addition, and the performers generally stick around after the shows to drink and meet the audience. Speaking as someone that performs there and sees so many shows, I think that the bar has been one of the most welcome additions to the theatre.

There is a mix of weekly shows (TheatreSports, Mainstage, Family Show), shows that change monthly (Showcase Shows and Wednesday Night shows) and an open mic on Sunday night. Folks need to use the website to set their expectations (if you want sketch, make sure you're coming on a sketch night), but there's pretty much a great show happening at any given point.

Do You Think Your Funny?. If you think you're funny, you could be in Improv Boston -- but if you'd rather leave the funny to the veterans, pop in and catch a show. If you're so inclined you can hang out with the cast after wards for the mere price of a beer. Rub shoulders with average Joes and up and coming stars. And be prepared to laugh. Improv is not stand-up, and its not sketch comedy -- if you go in expecting either of those things, you'll be disappointed, but if you get there expecting to see peolpe being funny by teh seat of their pants, you won't be disappointed

Pleasantly surprised! Smart comedy.. I wanted to see comedy for my 30th birthday. I have seen a bunch of improv before - but ImprovBoston's show (I saw the Main Stage - Saturday night show) totally blew me away! I was really surprised.

It's not your typical gamey improv thing with cheesy one-liners. (Not at all like Whose Line is it...) Instead, it was much smarter than that.

The performers literally had me (and my friends) from beginning to end with intertwining stories and jokes. When I left, my stomach hurt - i was laughing so hard.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for smarter comedy - and a really fun night out!
