“this is a great deli style restaurant”
“The atmosphere is inviting and warm, especially nice on a sunny day because of all the windows on the street from which to watch the good people go about their business in Inman square.”
“The S&S is a great place to meet up with friends, and is fairly inexpensive.”
“For me, it's a good stand-by when I don't feel like walking any farther or waiting very long for seating.”
Rudest waitstaff ever. Food slightly better than Denny's.. Food was filling and marginally better than Denny's. Atmosphere clean and lively, if lacking in windows in many areas due to expansion of the restaurant into neighboring buildings. The kicker was that an old friend (who I hadn't seen in two years [I informed waitstaff of this fact]) and I were pressured to leave a half hour after receiving our meals (we were finishing up). This was repeated two more times in the next 20 minutes by progressively ruder waitstaff. I can safely say this was the worst dining experience ever. As another reviewer said, they seem more interested in customer turnaround than repeat customers (or good food).
I love S&S.
S & S is a delicious restaurant that offers breakfast, lunch, brunch, dinner, and desserts. My personal favorite is brunch. (I could eat brunch for every meal, really.) S & S makes delicious omelettes in several varieties, all except one for $9.95; which also include home fries, fruit, and a bagel with cream cheese. Not a bad deal! S & S is also widely known for their deli specialties (lox, whitefish, cheese blintzes), french toast, and pancakes. You really can't go wrong. Finish it up with a signature cocktail, e.g., bloody mary, mimosa, or bellini, and you have a truly delicious brunch!
While the place is pretty busy on the weekends, the wait is worth it. The restaurant is very reasonably priced for the quality of food. I have gone in a large group and they have been able to accommodate us, which shows a lot about a place, even in the most busy times.
Reliable Inman Square brunch. S&S strikes me as a well-oiled machine. They can get pretty busy on the weekends, but they know how to manage, and so it's reliably fast. But one thing that really bugs me is that the machine-like attitude can be really rigid. For example, they don't allow substitutions — any. In fact, my server was once downright disparaging towards me even just for asking. The thing is, you get tons of food with your delicious omelet, but sometimes you don't want a bagel plus fruit salad with your eggs, you know what I'm sayin'? Too bad, because they have to keep up "the inventory." All said and done, though, the Bavarian French Toast tempts me quite often and I periodically wake up dreaming about their omelets on weekends. For me, it's a good stand-by when I don't feel like walking any farther or waiting very long for seating.
An Inman Square favorite since 1919, S&S serves the most popular weekend brunch in Cambridge.. An Inman Square favorite since 1919, S&S serves the most popular weekend brunch in Cambridge. Delicious offerings include the boursin cheese omelet stuffed with spinach, mushrooms, and tomatoes; homemade potato pancakes; and sage & thyme-flavored country sausage. Named after founder Ma Edelstein?s Yiddish saying ?Es and es? (eat and eat), S&S also specializes in traditional deli food. Try the Reuben on rye loaded with lean corned beef; the hearty matzo ball soup; or the smoked whitefish platter that comes with a bagel slathered in cream cheese. Dinner entrees also sparkle, including the juicy N. Y. sirloin steak and great veal parmigiana. You can also get chicken anyway you want ? skewered, stuffed or roasted. With its large windows and light wood paneling, this bright eatery is very modern. But it also pays tribute to its 80-year-old past with pictures of Inman Square?s history.
Delicious, Wait-worthy brunch. Their other food options, sandwiches, pasta, etc. are fine. But brunch is definitely worth any wait. They offer great portions with delicious food. In the fall they have pumpkin spice pancakes, which are so good! The service is usually ok, thought during brunch the servers are extremely busy. During that time, you may have to wait a little longer than usual for drink refills, etc.-- but it is still worth it.
Wannabe NY style Jewish Deli. This place is the worst!! If you've ever been to Rein's Deli in CT you're quite mistaken if you think your embarking on the same venture. They may have the same look and feel (sort of), but the food is subpar. I only ordered the pastrami sandwich- which is the staple of any great Deli. It was literally the worst sandwich I have ever had!! The marble rye bread came thinly sliced and not toasted or grilled? How is this supposed to support the fattiest pastrami ever served?? Well lets just say it didn't. Immediately upon trying to pick it up- the bread so soaken completely fell apart. It was merely hanging on by a thread w/ the one small piece of swiss cheese that wasn't even melted! Save your time and money and the next time you're in CT experience what a real deli should be like.
This tried and true deli in Cambridge is an old neighborhood favorite..
The Scene
Located in Inman Square, this Cambridge institution has been attracting hordes of hungry diners since it first opened back in 1919. With its bright and cheery decor and easily wiped tables this is a great place to take kids. S&S Deli boasts a loyal take out clientele who zip in and out of the restaurant with amazing speed.
The Food
The knockwurst broadens the horizons of hot dog lovers and old-timers swear by the blintzes. Although there's no kids menu, most of the food could be found on one. Lots of snacky foods and deli items including chicken soup and other nursery eats keep the young ones happy. Kids especially love the (underdone) french fries.
Very Disppointed. One of the worst service I have ever experienced. Management and the waitstaff are more interested in a high turnaround for each table than attending to their customer. I definately would not reccomend this to anyone.
Quality has slipped. The S&S was good 2 years ago. Recently the quality of the food has slid downhill. Was such a great place for a meal, sorry to see it decline.
Go for Brunch.
Lunch and dinner are fine at S&S, but brunch is really the meal to go for. Start with the delicious warm cinnamon rolls, then dig into any of the excellent omelettes, the stuffed french toast, or the corned beef hash and eggs. Yum!
And go early, or be prepared to wait.
