This eyeware institution offers a wides selection of both designer frames (read: Chanel) and cheaper options, along with optometrists too.
Editor's Tips
- Know Before You Go:
- The best bet is, of course, to make an appointment to visit one of their optometrists but both the doctors and the eyewear consulants take drop-ins too.
After hours savior!

After hours emergency
I woke up one morning to find that my eye was a little irritated and swollen but I couldn’t afford to miss a busy day of work at the office so I decided to ignore it. Well as the day went on, it started to bother me more and more. I was talking to one of my co-workers and she recommended I put a tea bag on it to help calm the irritation. I was skeptical but desperate at the same time and I only had an hour until the day was over so i thought it couldn’t hurt to try it, right? -- WRONG! It actually swelled more, so much so that i could barely see through it! At this point i’m freaking out in the bathroom wanting to strangle my co-worker for making me look like a pirate who lost his eye patch. After i gathered myself I searched cambridge eye doctors and dialed the first one that came up (Harvard Square Eye Care). They were supposed to have been closed 5 mintues ago but after listening to my hysterical blabbering for 20 seconds she told me very confidently that she could take care of me and to come on over to the office anyway. I stumbled in 5 mintues later and she was waiting for me patiently at the front desk as the last couple employee’s walked out the door. She took a look at my eye and immediately knew what was wrong and how to treat it. She also reassured me that my co-worker only had the best intentions and wasn’t trying to make me blind, i just happened to have an allergic reaction to it. She gave me some medicated drops right away so that my eye was already starting to feel better by the time i left and a prescription for more. I was so grateful for Dr. Dickerman’s patience in seeing me after-hours even though i was almost incoherent. It’s comforting to know that there are places out there like Harvard Square Eye Care that will take care of you even when the timing isn’t right.
give these guys a try

Really great eyeglass frames! Without-a-doubt the best experience I have had with an eye care office. I originally went to Harvard Square Eye Care because they take my VSP insurance. They are the only one's in the square who take VSP and I work near there. I was happy with the exam that Dr. Ip provided. She took the time to know exactly what I needed for a prescription. It was the first time someone took the time to actually try out the prescription on me and I really appreciated her doing that.
The eyeglass stylists helped allot when it came to choosing a frame. There were allot of really great eyeglass frames to choose from. I was surprised at all the quality of choices. I found quite a few that looked well on me. It is apparent that someone is choosing frames very selectively. Give these guys a try.
you should go

I highly recommend Harvard Square Eye Care. I was walking by the window and noticed the Best of Boston sign. I needed a small repair on my glasses and ended up getting my pair fixed and buying a new pair because of their wide and stylish selection. They were very helpful, friendly and I'm definitely going to be a repeat customer. It's nice to visit a business with such a warm and personal approach to their clients. Even the doctor came out to say hello as she was in between patients to give me her quick opinion on my eye condition. I'm considering switching my care to her practice I was so impressed with her and her staff. Definitely give Harvard Square a try. Great location and personal service.
best exam ever

This is honestly the best eye care experience I have ever had. I went in because I saw their huge selection on the website. It turns out my prescription is 3 years old and no longer valid. I got a full exam and with my insurance ended up paying $10 for an exam. But the part that blew me way was their willingness to help me right then and there. Once we discovered my prescription wasn't valid they told me to go have a cup of coffee and they would squeeze me into the booked schedule in 20 minutes. I was floored. The exam was the most in depth vision test I have ever done. Once the exam was over I was brought out front and offered help by an optician to pick glasses. The selection here is fantastic. Tons of unique frames I have never seen anywhere else. Believe me I have looked. While looking the gentleman helping me(Clark) noticed the nose-pad on my own pair needed replacing. Before I knew it he had my glasses and was back with a new nose-pad for me. I was in a rush that day and couldn't shop for frames. I also wanted to bring my girlfriend back to help me decide. When I told him this I expected him to become curt and disinterested in helping me. That was not the case. He said he would write down the frames I had picked out in a book that way if I decided to come back there would be a record. I asked how much I owed for the repair and he refused to let me pay. 1 week later I came back with my girlfriend and I picked a frame I never would have chosen on my own but looks amazing. When we were done I was told in 2-3 days I would have new glasses. 2 hours later I was called to come and pick up my completed order. WHAT!? It turns out Clark had to make a trip to the lab in porter square that afternoon on unrelated business. The glasses were completed while he was there. I work across the street and had new glasses back the same day! I have never been more impressed with a purchase like this in my life.
One Happy Customer

I have never bothered to write a positive feedback letter like this, but my experience at Harvard Square Eye Care was so exceptional that I wanted to let you know how wonderful it was. I started wearing glasses when I was 7 years old, and was teased by my classmates because they said I looked nerdy. So I could not wait to get out of glasses, and when soft contact lenses appeared on the scene, when I was 25, I immediately switched to them. But they are a lot of work, and I have dry eyes, so I started again looking for glasses frames that looked good on me. 32 years later, I have 32 years worth of purchased and then discarded (because they did not look good) glasses behind me. I discovered Harvard Square Eye Care by googling glasses and Best of Boston, so I made the trek over there (from MIT, where I work), walked in, and announced to Clark Goodwin that I was probably on a mission impossible. But Clark immediately showed me some frames that he knew would look good on me, and he patiently customized the lenses so that they were as lightweight as possible (condensed glass), the right shape for my face, and would optimize my vision from very near vision to distance vision. Clark is awesome, very attentive, very upbeat, very good at explaining the technicalities of my customized glasses. I purchased the glasses and picked them up last week. They are amazing! Clark was right on; I look even better with glasses than without now. And my vision, compared to that with my contact lenses, is exceptional. No more reading glasses :-) These glasses are not going to be discarded -- the first pair I' have kept in 32 years. Harvard Square Eye Care stands out for the variety of quality options that one has for eyeglasses, but all the inventory in the world isn't going to make any difference if the service is poor. Clark gave perfect service; it could not have been better. Best of all, he eliminated the tension that I always feel when I shop for eyeglasses. Clark is a treasure; you need to know that. Keep him; he will keep me coming back again and again, as I look at sunglasses and other options available to me to supplement my eyeglasses.
