REVIEW FROM CITYSEARCH's 3BUCKBITES DICTATOR. I wouldn't have known this brownie was vegan if the chalkboard sign didn't proudly proclaim it as such. Fudgey, rich, topped with walnut halves, and drizzled with chocolate, PLUS I haven't oppressed cows? No wayyyy. I also adore Veggie Planet's pizza to tiny, vegan-friendly bits. Try their vegan peanut curry, lunch for henry, or portobello redhead pizzas for spiritually satisfying treat.
Finally, Vegan food!. I am vegan, and I am so thankful for veggie planet! Hot hippie waiters, vegan food that is actually tolerable (the vegan oddlot is breathtaking...), and good music! The vegan brownies are by no means healthy, but are a nice treat now and then. The only issue I have is that sometimes you'll be eating them and you'll get a big bite of unmixed baking soda. Other than that, I have no complaints.
Harvard Square hangout is beloved by area vegetarians for its meatless dishes and pizzas..
In Short
Filled with white ponytails and bald pates, this Club Passim eatery is home base to the Harvard Square bohemian culture (think Ramblin' Jack, Arlo Guthrie and patchouli). The menu contains numerous veggie entrees that get their bulk from fresh flatbread or brown rice. Many diners opt for light pizzas that set the area standard for healthy pies (toppings include tempeh and tofu). Traditionalists opt for the Vermont cheddar with tomato and basil variety.
Not that healthy.
The food here only pretends to be healthful. It's overloaded with refined carbohydrates (pizzas with huge white flour crusts, white rice, sugary desserts, sweetened drinks) and low in protein and fiber. While every pizza does have small amounts of veggies and protein, they are minuscule compared to the size of the crust. Mostly you are served a big pile o' starch. The only truly healthful thing on the menu is the Caesar salad, which is delicious but doesn't really conform to any known definition of Caesar salad, containing, as it does, tomatoes, olives, broccoli, and tofu. I don't know why they don't call it a tossed salad.
This is too bad, because Veggie Planet has so many wonderful principles: buy local, eat organic, etc.
Going to a show at Club Passim? Eat beforehand. If you have to eat there, get the salad or order your food on brown rice.
A Great Place to Go with Small Group of Friends. I really enjoy going here. I am a vegetarian and the food is some of the best for us veggies in the square. The staff is friendly and if you call your order in it will be ready for you when you get there. The only problem is it can get very busy. I do like the atmosphere though and I always meet nice people who will chat with me while I wait, which is more than I can say for most of Boston!
Great food, but plan on being there for a while.
The food is great, and the atmosphere is fun, but the waitstaff are few and overworked. Block out plenty of time for dinner (at least 2 hours), have a snack beforehand, and sharpen your conversation skills.
Ironically, makes a good date restaurant for precisely this reason.
Your LOVE & HELP for our Health and SOUL. Health Food has NEVER been easier to find and fantastic entertainment is never to too far away. Prices are fair, food and service are excellent values. I was just layed off along with 9,999 others and Cambridge is no longer my work location. I live in south Plymouth and would love to open a Veggie Planet here. I only wish Veggie Planet provided a breakfast menu!
Surprise Surprise!. What a treat! I found this place on citysearch and thought I'd give it a try. The pizza was delicious! I am a customer for life!
So creative. If you are a pizza lover, you really have to stop in and try any of the varieties of pizzas to choose. This vegitarian delight is one of a kind. It is a little difficult to find...but once you find it...it will stay with you forever. (Harvard Square across from the Border Cafe...look for the Club Passim sign and head down the stairs!).
Wacky. This is an unusual little place located inside Club Passim, but Chef Didi Emmons turns out some of the most unusual and creative gourmet pizzas I have ever seen- A definite must try next time you are in Harvard Square!
