When you need a beer.... Charlie's is really great for two things: 1) being outside and 2) drinking beer. The Beer Garden is a summer haven. Other than that, it is not my fav -- The burgers didn't impress me, and neither did the 10 minute wait for a server (and a snarky one at that) to come over to our table on a pretty quiet weekday night. But for when the weather's too good to meet up for drinks inside, there's nowhere else you want to go but Charlie's.
Great food, So, So service. The food here is GREAT and the prices are good too. Try the steak tips, they are EXCELLENT. They have a pretty good variety so everyone could find something. The only problem was the service, it was pretty slow and very hard to get refills.
Good beer, Good music. Good beer and a very very good music selection are the main draws for us to Charlie's Kitchen. The waitstaff is charmingly unenthusiastic, but I guess that's just part of the experience. The food is nothing to write home about...typical bar food...just beware that if you order a grilled cheese and other people order burgers, there's a good chance that your sandwich will be fairly chilly when it gets to the table. My only real objection is that last time we were there, they were playing a discovery channel TV show at the bar that was pretty much just animals mauling and eating each other. The guy friends I was with thought it was entertaining, but watching entrails being strewn about didn't help my appetite at all.
I wish I had their jukebox in my apartment. The upstairs is by far my favorite place to grab a drink, eat cheap greasy food, and listen to Jawbreaker or New Order blasting from the jukebox.
Good beer list, aweome wait staff!. Don't anger the waitresses! They can be surly but they're great! Food is okay--it's cheap bar food-grilled cheese, veggie soup, cheap decent burgers. Avoid the vegatarian options, they usually don't turn out well. Trivia is competitive but fun. The upstairs is usually better than downstairs--unless it's karaoke night or live band night, both of which should be avoided.
A lived-in neighborhood bar in the heart of tourist and student central..
The Scene
While Charlie's has more of a diner setting on the ground floor, it's got a dive-like bar on the upper level. Sit yourself down at the second floor's curvaceous bar or one of several tables, or sneak your small group of friends into one of the high-backed booths for cozier and somewhat private conversation. Guests here are regulars--a mix of college students, tattooed women, blue-collar workers and a slew of mid-20-to-30-something plaid-shirt types.
The Food
Charlie's has a wealth of ales from domestic to imported; try a thick and creamy Murphy's Irish Stout. Don't forget about the food--every once in a while, you can feast on scrumptious lobster dishes from a special Lobsterfest menu for less than $10. For a more enlightened drinking/dining experience, pop some coins into the bar's jukebox and listen to everything from the Beatles to New Order.
Come for what you get. This place is great if you're expecting it. It's rough around the edges atmosphere is appealing for grabbing a burger and a beer with your friends. The beer list is great for the dive atmosphere. The double cheesburger is a the best choice on the menu. If they are serving the lobster bisque, I don't recommend missing it. Can't say enough good things about Charlie's.
Good Goodness. This Cambridge landmark can be noisy and packed. But when it comes to morning after hangover cures, or late night study breaks, this is the place. Greasy, huge portions, washed down with cold beers.
we all do..... Hate the owner....love the bar......I love the harley's Chicken cd in the juke box.....who ever made that is a genious!!!!!
lotta great guys!!. This place rocks at night- I'm a stewardess new in town, and this place is crawling with great guys! No more cold winter nights for me. Great beer on tap, awesome jukebox. The only negative is the old men sitting at the downstairs bar exchanging old drinking stories, and tipping over their glasses. Otherwise, a gal's dream come true!
