Editorial Review for L.A. Burdick – by Eric Grossman
The Scene
Swiss-trained chocolatier Larry Burdick's "showroom" offers a wide variety of dessert options in an intimate setting. With just nine tables and little standing-room, the cafe's usually crowded at night. Tables are first-come, first-serve, so prepare to be aggressive or to take your order to go. Servers are speedy and knowledgeable.
The Food
Gourmet brownies, cakes, tarts, tortes, world-class chocolates, and satisfying cups of coffee and hot chocolate are all worth the calories. The chocolate mousse cake is a veritable work of art (Burdick received "Bon Appetit"'s Food Artisan of the Year award for it), as gentle mousse hooded with dried apple rests atop a dense chocolate cake. Ground hazelnuts, zesty orange peel and chocolate (surprise) make the hazelnut orange cake downright inspirational. Generous mugs of rich European-style hot chocolate and mocha latte are perfect for sharing.

Insider Tips
The ExtrasAmong Burdick's more unusual offerings is the lemon pepper pave, a dark chocolate truffle that's filled with pepper, lemon and cream.

Awesome chocolate, what more can I say? Sometimes the counter staff is great, sometimes not. Try the chocolate rodents! (citysearch won't let me say the "m" word) Consider planning to get your food to go, though, as the place is cramped with few seats.
Pros: Great price for the quality!
Cons: Small and sometimes hard to get a seat.

Burdick's has the richest, most decadent hot chocolate -- it's so thick, it could be a dessert in itself! (And you have a choice of dark, milk and ivory) If that's not enough chocolate for you, they also offer a wonderful assortment of chocolate candies and desserts. They also make a pretty good latte and offer a nice selection of teas. However, it's not the coziest or most relaxing of places; seating is extremely limited, so the remaining available space in the cafe is taken up by other people waiting for a seat... which makes it hard for customers that just want to get to the counter and order a hot chocolate. Still, if you have a hankering for hot chocolate, this is the only place in the Boston area to go.
Pros: chocolate, chocolate, chocolate
Cons: seating is a pain, very crowded
