Editorial Review for Herrell's Ice Cream – by Citysearch Staff
The Scene
Herrell's Ice Cream founder Steve Herrell is credited with launching the premium ice cream craze by being one of the first in the industry to crunch candies and other goodies into his frozen dessert recipes. This location of the franchise, popular with sugar-fiends of all flavors, features small tables and banquette or chair seating, and ice cream made on-premises.
The Food
Over the years, low-fat frozen yogurt, fruit sorbets and smoothies, malts and floats and other items have been added to the menu to complement Herrell's famous ice cream. More than 90 custom-made flavors cover everything from vanilla to jalapeno (seriously), though the rich chocolate pudding ice cream is hard to beat. That said, the trademark smoosh-ins--concoctions of candy, nuts or dried fruit mushed into the ice cream--are still the biggest draw. Herrell's famous hot fudge is now also sold by the jar.

Terrible experience. I went there with my wife 2 year old daughter and sister-in-law. The place was dirty. Really dirty, paper cups, crumpled napkins and spilt ice cream on the table, floor and counter tops, and the place smelt like urine, obvious, the staff working there could care less about hygine of the place. The smell coming from the vault room was awful. We order my daughter a kiddie cup, for $2 we a rip off more of a taste than anything and then as she was about to dig in we found a hair, we threw out the ice cream. But hey the staff did give us a $1 off coupon. I can not recommend this place for ice cream unless you car for food posioning
Pros: none
Cons: pretty dirty place

If service with a smile is what you're looking for, forget about the Harvard location. Otherwise, the ice cream is some of the best on the east coast. You gotta try the Smoosh-in, especially with the hard yogurt if you like yogurt. Delicious!!! Don't let the snobby Harvard attitude deter you from enjoying every last bite.
