Editorial Review for Bangkok Bistro – by Citysearch Staff

The Scene
This tiny restaurant combines comforting Thai cuisine, budget-friendly prices and an ultra-casual setting to produce one of the more popular off-campus diversions for the thousands of BC students who call Cleveland Circle home. Seats in the calming dining room are tough to come by in the early evenings, when many young couples stop by for a quick pre-film bite before heading over to the Circle Cinemas. Speedy waiters make sure water glasses stay filled and no one misses their movie.

The Food
Saccharine pad thai and bland rice dishes don't do much for food snobs and expats. But its hard to find a patron that isn't intrigued by the menu's more adventurous creations. Standouts include the creatively titled "Between the Sheets" (crunchy spring rolls filled with a jumble of ground shrimp and chicken) and "One Night in Bangkok" (an eye-watering spicy concoction of chicken, beef or seafood sauteed with basil and hot peppers).

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

With space at a premium (several tables are crammed on top of one another) and high noise levels when packed, this isn't an ideal spot for first dates, break-ups or other sensitive or confidential occasions.

The Extras

The kitchen tends to have a heavy hand with curry and hot pepper, so pay close attention to the number of stars next to each menu item, which denote spiciness levels.

When to Go

Avoid the restaurant, and Cleveland Circle in general, during BC football home games, when crowds choke the area.

I have had pretty decent yum woon sen in the past from my local Iowan Thai place. However, this place proved that the dish could be taken to a whole new level! There were so many goodies packed into this dish I could barely lift a forkful of glass noodles without fishing up a scallop, tomato, cabbage, meat, prawn, squid or peanut. I would highly recommend this dish to anyone who loves good yum woon sen. However, the other thing that I had there (chicken tom yum) was not very good. Perhaps it was the choice of meat that I chose to go with it that made it bland in taste.

Pros: Yum Woon Sen!

Cons: Tom yum soup

I had been wanting to try this place for a while since it always seemed like there was a crowd in there. Now I know why - it's a lot of food cheap, which is great for the local college kids on a budget. However it didn't make up for the blandness of the food. I had the yellow curry chicken, and my husband ordered some fried chicken thing which sounded like something more than what it was - beer battered chicken nuggets with two bland dipping sauces. The service was also pretty awful - there was one waiter for the whole place who was easily distracted, while the person who appeared to be the owner sat on his butt and barked orders at him. What really bothered me though was the weird smell I noticed coming from the kitchen (which we were seated next to, which is fine) and it didn't go away. I was then completely turned off when I happened to see one of the "chefs" cough into their hand and proceed to touch and fill takeaway containers without washing (if we hadn't already eaten I would have left at that point). I won't be going back here and will definitely be trying the other thai places around.

Pros: Good for cheap eats if you don't care about quality

Cons: food was okay, service was awful, unsanitary

When BC students tire of burgers and pizza, they head to this casual Cleveland Circle hangout for inventive, if inconsistent, Thai dishes.  See the full editorial review.
