What People Are Saying About Tacos El Charro

In Short – The Boston area's Mexican ex-pats head to this nondescript JP restaurant for a true taste of home, including excellent soft tacos filled with beef tongue or pineapple-flavored pork. This is one of the few area restaurants that serve sopes, tiny fried masa tarts topped with meat, beans, lettuce and cheese. Tamales are authentically delicious--stuffed with chicken or pork and steamed fragrantly moist in dried cornhusks. Don't pass up the outstanding birria (goat stew), a savory blend of meat, chiles and spices.
Authentic Mexican Food and Mariachi. That's right, Mariachi in Boston!

I have been enjoying Tacos El Charro since it first opened in the early '90s, long before it was dicovered by Boston's tastemongers. Being from Texas I was on a never-ending quest to find good Mexican in Boston- a venture that almost always led to disappointment. (NEVER take the recommendation of a Bostonian when it comes to Mexican food!) Tacos El Carro is the real deal! Home-made food and the music's great too! A really really fun and authentic experience. Keep in mind it is small and not-at-all fancy. I have just recently blogged about it. Go to www.drew-whoDOTcom to check it out.
- Pros: Authentic Mexican, food, atmosphere (not fancy) and music. Real Tacos!
- Cons: No longer a best kept secret; long wait times for a table in the tiny place.
Perfection...

Not only is the mariachi excellent, but the food is stellar and the most authentic I've had on the East Coast. This is a diamond in the rough - beware fine-diners, you are not walking into the darkened chic of Newbury Street's corner cousin Casa Romero. This is the land of real Mexican beer, real Mexican hot sauce (I mean HOT), real Mexican fare and the culture is there. Yes, you might wait a bit longer for the waitress to say hello, but you have plenty to do deciding on your meal, looking at the walls filled with memorabilia of Mariachi (I can only imagine are the photos of the family that owns the place), and listening to the music. This place is one of Boston's best kept secrets.
- Pros: Inexpensive, Live music, Authentic cuisine
Long, long wait
by Jim_fish
I went to Tacos El Charro for the first and last time to place a take out order. 45 minutes later, still no food and no one there to tell us when the food will be done. Bad service and too long a wait. Maybe new management would help. Bad customer service
no-one even asked us if we wanted something to drink.
- Cons: Bad service, slow
