Jamaica Plain bar-restaurant serves up standard favorites in welcoming environs..
In Short
Brightly lit and unchanged since the 50s, Galway house serves large portions of hearty food to a neighborhood crowd. The bar features draft specials and flat-screen TVs for game-watching and the dining area is staffed with friendly, long-time employees. Meat specialties include a huge platter of steak tips, Montreal rib eye, and a variety of sandwiches and burgers served with pickles and a green apple.

Scary outside, but once you're in, you're home..
I've lived in JP for 7 years. I was terrified of this place for the first 6. There was always some shady character outside the front door, smoking . There still is. But that's ok, go in anyhow. It's really good, you'll see. I wasn't born in JP, so I don't fully fit in, but I'm not a snotty yuppie either, so the hometown crowd lets me dine in peace. So, if you mind your manners and root for the Sox, you'll be fine. Order the steak tips, they're the best thing on the menu and a total bargain. I think they're about $11, and you get a ton of them. A close second is the fried chicken. And their clam chowder is amazing. Maybe I shouldn't let this secret out, but Galway House is a real find, despite its intimidating exterior and way too brightly lit interior.
