“The plantanos maduros were not so tasty.”
“Being a Cuban, I always like finding authentic cuban spots where everyone working there is latin, and the menu is the real deal.”
“The beans are the best i've had and you cant beat the price!”
Great Mamey Shake!.
Having lived in Miami for 4 years, I was seriously missing Cuban food up here in Boston. So I got a Zipcar and drove out to Jamaica Plains to give this place a whirl. I the following for take-out: mamey shake, cafe con leche, ropa vieja with plantanos maduros.
The mamey shake was so tasty and had me very anxious to get home and try the rest.
The cafe con leche tasted good but was a bit watery for some reason.
The ropa vieja was good but definitely doesn't compare to what you can find in Miami. The rice was just buttery enough, and I can't comment on the beans because I don't normally eat them.
The plantanos maduros were not so tasty. I think they had been sitting under a warmer. They weren't very plump and ripe, not sweet and juicy at all.
Overall, I enjoyed the food, especially for the price. I chatted with the owner while waiting and found him to be very friendly.
He told me that they would be starting delivery tomorrow (April 7, 2008) for the hours of 11-6. I will definitely call in or stop by to try their Cuban sandwich, which the owner says is the best in Boston. He also said that he makes the ham himself.
My favorite place to eat!.
I love Miami, this place is great... i get the Bistek plate everytime i go, its so good i cant bring myself to try anything else. The beans are the best i've had and you cant beat the price!
The only con i can come up with is sometimes its hard to relay to the staff what you're ordering unless you speak spanish, which i dont, but they are very patient about it. Theres not a lot of seating available on weekends either. But well worth the wait.
I swear if i ever get married they will cater the reception!
Editorial Review by Citysearch Editors. Colorful Latin restaurant lures lovers of Cuban and Dominican fare to Jamaica Plain.
Approved by me, a Cubana.
My husband took me here for lunch and we both ordered the Cuban Sandwich. Being a Cuban, I always like finding authentic cuban spots where everyone working there is latin, and the menu is the real deal. They also have Batidas (Milk Shakes) made with Papaya, Mango Coconut, etc! Dessert, where you could get flan for $1! The price was very reasonable.
You could tell that there are a lot of regulars that go, which I love. It made me feel right at home. We'll be bringing some friends with us the next time we go.
A good cubano.
While I prefer El Oriental's mofongo, I think Miami has a better Cuban sandwich and a fried yuca. I also prefer their service and atmosphere. I have eaten Cuban sandwiches everywhere and make mine from scratch. These are more stacked than El Oriental, tastier and a better value.
But again- El Oriental is nice too!
