Editorial Review for Thai Village – by Leah Gourley

The Scene
The bright green facade of Thai Village blends in with the South End's pile of eclectic boutiques. Inside, less than a dozen tables are subsumed in overwhelmingly generic mauve and green decor, but unexpectedly bold cuisine offsets the serene environment. Only the collection of takeout orders disturbs a tranquil dining experience orchestrated by reserved and courteous waitstaff.

The Food
Thai Village offers a more limited menu than other casual Thai restaurants, but it excels at what it offers. Traditional Thai dishes are generously portioned, especially considering their modest prices. The massive plate of pad thai is a standout, expertly spiced (not too spicy) and dotted with delicious shrimp. Chicken cashew uses the subtle sweetness of pineapples to douse a medley of fresh vegetables in a light sauce. Fried ice cream is a conventional, tastily executed dessert.

Insider Tips

Parking

Tremont Street's meters are in high demand, but they're the only option in a neighborhood littered with "resident only" spaces.

boston has a lot of thai restaurants, and i can say that honestly i've been to most of them. this has got to be the worst place for thai food i've ever been, and this includes the two average places on newbury and the two mediocre places on boylston near the prudential (not pad thai by berklee, the other two. pad thai is one of the best places). i've been there twice, both times as a very last resort b/c in the south end there aren't that many asian places, and both times the food i got was really terrible. the curry i got most recently was absolutely devoid of flavor, and it was watery. as in watered down watery. avoid at all costs.

Solid Thai food. Boston doesn't have much to offer when it comes to asian cuisine as compared to other cities, so it's good to at least get some solid thai every once in a while. Nothing fancy - nothing crazy good - just solid.

Tiny South End restaurant offers robust Thai cuisine straight from Bangkok, in deceptively simple surroundings.  See the full editorial review.
