Mike's Diner = A way of life.... With items such as the Emergency Room, with pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, and toast all combined into one glorious amalgam, it is no wonder that the line at Mike's continually spills out the door and onto the street. This is the place to be if you want to rub shoulders with local students, doctors, policemen, and factory workers, each enjoying this oh-so-healthy cuisine of grease--made exactly how your grandmother used to make it for you.

Average food. The food is fine, if you like store-bought bread and jelly from packets. Actually, the food is good, the portions are huge and the service is excellent for a small, crowded, very busy diner. If they had homemade breads and preserves, it would truly be something to rave about. After breakfast at Mike's, walk about two blocks down to Flour Bakery/Cafe for out-of-this-world baked goods and another cup of coffee. For either one, get there early!!

A United Nations of diners happily waits in line for the best breakfast in the South End.. The Scene
This is as authentic as diners get, right down to the black-and-white checked tablecloths. Harried but friendly waitresses dart from table to table with trays of food, stepping around hungry patrons waiting for a seat. Piped-in Elvis Presley croons over the din of noisy customers. Regulars get the nod from behind the counter; coffee arrives without a word being uttered. A cross-section of South Enders and urbanites makes for prime people-watching, and no one seems to mind the cramped quarters.

The Food
The extensive menu does provide a sturdy selection of lunch offerings, but it bursts at the seams with delicious breakfast dishes, from Belgian waffles (made from scratch) to thick French toast, cooked to a golden-brown perfection. Oversized omelettes, accompanied with a heaping helping of delicious Red Bliss home fries, arrive hot, oozing with cheddar. Corned beef hash, made fresh daily, is well-worth the wait.

Yummy-YUM,YUM!!. I've been going to Mike's for some time now. I usually go every Sunday. This place is the best breakfast place in town! The food is terrific; fills you up just right. The service is good too. I must say Kudos to the waitresses. They are very friendly and courteous and the best. If your served by Lucy, you are very fortunate.

No question of safety. We had early brunch at Mike's on a recent Sunday, and lucky we came early. This is apparently THE hang out for the Boston police, so definitely safe. Two of us had waffles- excellent. Our friend had a plate that was overflowing with Corned beef hash, fried potatoes, English muffin and eggs. If size of portion matters- this is the place. The three of us ate well for $25, including tip. No fruit slection other than juice. The strawberries on the waffles are the canned variety.

10. I've been a faithful diner at Mike's for a few years now. They make absolutely the best omelets and pancakes in Boston. The omelets are huge and fluffy and stuffed with whatever you have ordered (the Manny's omelet, with turkey, swiss and bacon is my favorite). The pancakes are huge and delicious. The apple/walnut pancakes are stuffed with lots of chopped apples and walnuts. Beware of the Citysearch listings, though. Mike's was open for dinner briefly, but they only do breakfast and lunch is only M-F. On weekends, it's breakfast food only, through closing. But, it's packed anyhow.
