It was going to be a great day …
My wife is a professional hair stylist. She opened her own business in April. In may she took a Wella class and the teacher, Rossanne works at a salon in Boston, IIsoci Salon. Melissa decided she liked Rosannes hair so much she would make an appointment with the stylist who had cut Rosanne's hair.
Rosanne informed Melissa that it was James who had cut and styled her hair.
Melissa wanted to make an appointment for September 4th, 2012, but was told that James would be back from the Cape on the 5th of September.. That was a slight inconvienence, but not too bad. OK. So I take the day off of work to drive my wife to Boston. She takes the day off of work to get her hair cut, just under 100 miles away. A bit much to get a haircut, but my wife really liked Rosanne's hair.
We pickup the rent a car the night before and I put in $35.00 worth of gas in it. There was no confirmation call from Isoci as to Melissa's appointment, but we both figured they did not do that (She is quite prompt about making appointment confirmation calls.)
We wake up early September 5th and get ready to go... the big day of Melissas haircut. We stopped for a quick bite to eat and as we were about 1 minute from the highway, Phone call, from Isoci... There has been an emergency and James cannot be at your appointment. He can take you at 5:00. No other solution. We cancel because we do not want to be in Boston for 5:00, we have to return a rental car or be charged another day and we have to be at work the next day, and be productive.
So we are out of a haircut, two days off of work and 75 dollars.... I call and ask for the owner. I get a gentleman named Keith on the phone. I tell him I want 75 dollars for my lost cash for an appointment Isoci Salon screwed up on. He says he will call me back. The only thing he is willing to do is to get my wife in with a stylist who has been doing hair for four years. That won't fly. That was the end of the story from Isoci Salon, until 1:25 P.M. Where James the stylist calls and says thank you for having flexibility to reschedule, that he had an emergency. Frankly, if I had an emergency, I would not be taking clients that day, something did not sit well with me on that. Also, James offered nothing as far as saying “come in, I will make it up to you...” Nope. Nothing. NADA.
Pretty much I am out 75 dollars, two work days between my wife and myself and Isoci could care less about one appointment.
I know this, that a business that continues to practice as they do, will not be in business long. I wonder how embarrasing it must be for Rosanne if she runs into my wife again?
sometimes too many awards =ego – I Soci has won tons of Boston awards and holds a great deal of parties. I went there for years and really liked it but every single time I went it was huge changes. I understand the constant updating of *cool* but it was too much. They also give you the complete "bums rush" the MINUTE your hair is done and i HATE that. They are even frustrated if you have to go to the bathroom!
Eyebrows – Mondi is very sweet and very talented! I live in Nyc but travel back and forth to Boston. I look forward to my visits with Mondi. She waxes my brow first to clean them up and then goes in with tweezers and scissors to fine tune the shape. i always leave looking and feeling beautiful!!

They're artists, really. – I got my hair colored by Daryl and cut by Melissa. Love it more than I've every loved my hair. Not kidding. I'm an artist who appreciates it when others take pride in their craft and do it well. My hair was a mess from a bad dye job I got elsewhere-- I had four different colors going on when I got there and I didn't know if it could be fixed without compromising the look I wanted. Thanks Daryl & Melissa!
Daryl Drake - An Outstanding Colorist – I called I Soci Salon in a panic after a new hair dresser fried my hair and left me with roots leaving the salon. I did not know what to do to fix my hair, but I knew that something needed to be done fast. A co-worker recommended I Soci and I called and begged for a last minute appointment. Daryl Drake had just returned from the UK and luckily was able to see me that day. Daryl is a life saver. He made me feel like I was in good hands immediately. He listened to my likes and dislikes and worked with me on a plan to bring my hair color back to what I wanted. Daryl is truly the BEST colorist I have ever gone to. He is a real artist and has mastered his craft. I wish that the original disaster had never happened, but feel lucky that it brought me to Daryl. If you are looking for an amazing colorist with a great personality, I recommend calling I Soci Salon and scheduling an appointment with Daryl.

The BEST colorist - Daryl – If you are looking for a relaxed, but professional salon on Newbury St., I Soci is the place. Everyone that works there was friendly and nice, not snobby AT ALL. I called in dire need of color and they put me with Daryl. I am EXTREMELY picky about my hair, I hate ashy blond on me and a lot of stylists have a hard time making my hair warm without being too gold or red. Not Daryl, I have never been so happy with my color. He made my mousy brown hair a gorgeous and natural (no stripes, I hate stripes in my hair!) honey blond with lots of sun kissed highlights. And he was sweet as can be too - very down to earth! I'm so happy I found I Soci Salon and DARYL!!!
Good color, terrible shampoo – I go to see Heidi; I've had three visits with her so far. The price is steep: $90, though you are paying for an experienced colorist (plus tip), and she does a good job and is a very inviting, friendly person (also, they send you 20% off coupons from time to time, and appear to have good management). However, you don't get much time with a lead colorist: shampoo folks do the rest, which is not satisfactory for such an expensive service.
Beware the shampoo & dry! Each time I've been, a young woman is sent to wash & dry my fine hair. And because handing my hair to her sends me into a panic, I'm looking for a new place. She attempted to wet brush it even, with a plastic brush! This is a mistake not even a five-year old would not make. She always seems immensely annoyed. If not checked by someone more senior, these young interns stand to make serious mistakes.
In my humble opinion, this is a _serious_ business mistake for such an expensive, high-end salon, that prides itself on talent. They try to max out the bookings for the senior folks, and have interns doing the rest. But the interns aren't trained; this one is not even particularly pleasant. And since you see them last , and spend more time with them than the senior person, it is these folks you remember, along with their guffaws.
Sure, have a young person do the shampoo. But I think 15 minutes more per client-given the cost --would be reasonable, so that you had the feeling the person you are paying to see is actually attending to you. And, can't they afford the best, most cheerful young people for interns, to take care of their customers? These people are not the least important people there; I am, as I said, going to take my $$ elsewhere because of the lack of care & attitude of one of these folks.
Giovanni is the best – I have been getting my hair cut by him for years and have never been disappointed. I've lived all along the east coast and cannot find anyone who compares and always end up finding an excuse to make the drive to come back to Boston. He has fixed what others have messed up, basically he is a lifesaver.
