Editorial Review for Sugar Shack – by Eric Grossman
The Scene
In a city not exactly known for its hip-hop and R&B scene, the Sugar Shack makes every effort to serve as Boston's top urban dance club. Students and young professionals fill the club's dance floor to the gills, grooving to DJ-supplied tunes. Those taking a break head for the seasonal outdoor patio for conversation (which the club's volume levels all but rule out).
The Draw
Except for the rare occasions when there's live music, the Shack's DJs spin hot, contemporary hip-hop and house, with the occasional R&B and soul classic thrown in. Scenesters know that on the weekends you have to dress to impress to get in. Hungry patrons escape the madness of the dance floor to nibble on a slice of pizza on the patio. Wednesday and Thursday nights bring younger crowds (19 and up).

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoExpect to pay about twice the cover on weekends ($8) as on weeknights ($3 to $5).

Save TimeIf you're planning on taking a cab home, get a head start on the masses and leave before 2am, or face a tiring race for a cab.

This place is a joke. Like a bad TV show's idea of a club, with pathetic "hip-hop" and bartenders who don't know how to make anything but the simplest drinks. The crowd was a bunch of escapees from a frat party and at least five bachelorette parties. If I hadn't been with a bunch of friends willing to have fun with its lameness, it would have been the worst night out ever. I hope this isn't Boston's idea of a club, because it doesn't even match those in cities half its size. Don't go here unless you want to spend the night making fun of the pathetic patrons or re-live the era of "Baby Got Back."
Pros: people you can mock, dark so people won't, recognize you
Cons: music from 1991, radio-'safe' hip-hop, plain-jane drinks

I've been to this place on a few occasions and it seems like it's come along way. Great vibe, music, and look. There's always something new popping up inside. The place is a lot different than the old Sugar Shack. Saturday is always off the hook so I suggest going Friday's...still crowded but more room to lounge.
Pros: always busy, inexpensive, good looking staff
Cons: always busy
